Maryland star shortstop Chris Hacopian has committed to Texas A&M via the NCAA Transfer Portal, On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed. Hacopian, who was named Second Team All-Big Ten in 2024 and 2025, was On3’s No. 2-ranked remaining player in the portal behind Virginia‘s Henry Ford.

The Potomac, MD native started 52 games for Maryland this season, hitting for a .375 batting average with 11 doubles, 14 home runs, 61 RBI, a .651 SLG% and a .502 OBP%. He will likely be one of the top prospects in the 2026 MLB Draft.

Hacopian was originally committed to Wake Forest out of high school but flipped to his home state team once head coach Matt Swope took over in 2024. He now leaves the program that his father, Derek, also played for in 1992.

Swope spoke highly of the newest Aggie shortstop last season, following his grand slam against James Madison on March 19, 2024.

“We knew at times watching him that he would have these streaks where he was really good, but it’s scary to see if he can figure it out,” Swope said. “This early in his career, he’s taking what the game gives him and he’s just been unbelievable. I can’t say enough about him. What a great person, what a great teammate. Eventually, hopefully a great leader, but you just can’t say enough about him.”

The star infielder comes as a prized addition for Texas A&M head coach Michael Earley, who was on the hot seat last season after the Aggies missed the NCAA Tournament for just the second time since 2006. Athletic director Trev Alberts, however, released a vote of confidence for Earley following the conclusion of their season.

“Earlier today, I met with Coach Earley to discuss the state of our baseball program,” Alberts said in a statement. “I appreciate Mike’s work in taking a holistic view of what changes need to be made so that we have a baseball program that meets our high standards. Baseball success is critically important to Texas A&M. I am confident in Mike’s ability to execute the needed change and fully support his vision going forward.”
