Texas A&M has only one path this week to keeping its NCAA Baseball Tournament hopes alive, and it won’t be an easy one. Win and they likely keep themselves in the hunt. If not, things will be looking pretty bleak.

The Aggies put themselves in this position after getting swept this past weekend in a three-game against Missouri, dropping their overall record to 27-23 on the season. If the season ended today, Texas A&M would not be in the field according to the latest projections from On3’s Jonathan Wagner.

But the Aggies have a chance to win a series against a top 25 opponent coming up against No. 10 Georgia beginning on Thursday. Coach Michael Earley was blunt about how critical this is to his team’s postseason chances.

“We’ve got to win,” he said. “There’s no secret about that. But we’ll take it game-by-game and see where it ends up.”

The series against the Bulldogs marks the season finale for Texas A&M with the SEC Tournament looming with a May 20 start date. Even if the Aggies manage a couple of wins to pull off the upset, they might need a couple more at the conference tournament in Hoover to grab the attention of the committee.

A&M now ranks No. 59 in RPI following the series sweep to Mizzou from this weekend. The Aggies will need to find some better offense in Athens after scoring only one run each in the final two games of the series against the Tigers.

The Aggies will look for Jace LaViolette and Wyatt Henseler, who have a combined 28 home runs this season, to get their bats going this coming weekend. But Earley isn’t trying to put too much pressure on his players despite knowing what’s at stake.

“Just one game at a time,” he said. “We’ve won away from home before when maybe it didn’t look like we would. I expect us to go out and do the same thing. The approach is going to be one game at a time. This team has been resilient all year and we’re gonna continue to be like that.”

First pitch for Game 1 of the series between Texas A&M and Georgia is set for 5 p.m. CT at Foley Field in Athens. The Aggies will look to get off to a quick start in that one and perhaps steal the game, which could give them momentum for the rest of the series.
