The Bucky McMillan era in College Station began with a 98-68 win over Northwestern State on Monday. It’s a fast start for the new men’s basketball coach’s tenure and his signature ‘Bucky Ball.’

Texas A&M football coach Mike Elko sent his fellow Aggies head coach a text message of congratulations after the victory. McMillan responded in hilarious fashion, while also highlighting the success Elko has brought the football program.

“I texted him congratulating him on his first win,” Elko said on Aggie Football Hour, via TexAgs. “And he texted me back that he couldn’t lose a game before I did.”

Elko’s football program is currently 8-0 — the best start for Texas A&M since the 1992 season. They’re the only remaining team in the SEC left undefeated this season, and sit alone atop the conference standings heading into Week 11.

Texas A&M was ranked No. 3 in the first College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday and have four games left on their regular season schedule. They’re set to travel to Missouri to take on the No. 22-ranked Tigers in Columbia.

For McMillan’s men’s basketball program, beginning the season with a 30-point victory certainly feels good for the 42-year-old head coach. But is there a chance that the basketball team actually loses before Elko’s football team?

The men’s basketball program has several matchups this month that are against power conference opponents — Oklahoma State (Nov. 9), UCF (Nov. 14) and Florida State (Nov. 28) — before football’s regular season has concluded. December will feature games against the ACC’s Pitt (Dec. 2) and SMU (Dec. 7). For reference, the SEC championship game in football is on Dec. 6.

For now, both teams will look to focus on their task at hand. For Elko’s group, it’s the road trip at Missouri before rounding out the regular season against South Carolina, Samford and Texas. McMillan’s bunch have a matchup against Texas Southern on Thursday.

A similar outcome is expected for the Texas Southern matchup. Against NW State, the Aggies had five players score in double figures including 18 points from Ruben Dominguez off the bench.

McMillan played 10 guys at least 16 minutes on the court during the win. Always rotating fresh bodies, Texas A&M was able to wear out its opposition early and took a 56-35 lead into the locker room. McMillan’s fast-paced style of basketball helped them secure the victory by pouring on 42 more points in the second half.

Fans will get a fun slate of Aggies sports beginning Thursday with the Texas Southern matchup. Texas A&M football will be in action on Saturday vs. Mizzou and then on Sunday, fans get to witness a third Aggies men’s basketball game in a six-day span when they travel to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State in a true road game.
