Texas’ Steve Sarkisian had to walk out to the Aggie War Hymn in his appearance at SEC Media Days on Tuesday. Texas A&M’s Mike Elko then didn’t have to return the favor by walking out to ‘The Eyes of Texas’ when his turn came on Thursday.

Elko closed out the week of coaches who came to the podium this week on Thursday afternoon in Atlanta. When he did, though, the Aggie War Hymn was correctly played this time with the Aggies’ head coach opening his statement with a joke at the conference’s mistake with the Longhorns a few days ago.

“For all of you who had ‘The Eyes of Texas’ as the song I was walking out to, you lost your bet,” Elko smiled.

The rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M returned last year with the Longhorns’ arrival into the Southeastern Conference as the two hadn’t met since they were Big 12 opponents last in 2011. In that first game in the series in thirteen years, which was a Top-20 matchup between two teams who were in the race to make the SEC Championship, UT came to College Station and won 17-7 over A&M.

SEC wrongly plays ‘Aggie War Hymn’ to introduce Texas’ Steve Sarkisian at Media Day

While introducing Texas’ Steve Sarkisian at SEC Media Days on Tuesday, someone accidentally played the Aggie War Hymn, Texas A&M‘s fight song. Several attentive media members in attendance immediately pointed out the mistake online, while Sarkisian exchanged a smile and laugh with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey on the way to the podium but didn’t say anything about the awkward mix-up during his opening statement.

“You know, in football, we evaluate turnovers after a game, right, or during a game,” Sankey said to open Wednesday at SEC Media Days. “A bit of a fumble yesterday. I want to acknowledge we had the wrong music played after I introduced Steve Sarkisian. So, mistakes happen. No ill intent there. And we’ll make sure we do better in possessing our responsibilities.”
