Urban Meyer fights for Texas to get into College Football Playoff

The College Football Playoff bubble is LOADED heading into the second-to-last CFP Rankings release Tuesday night.

Programs such as BYU, Miami, Utah, Vanderbilt, and Texas are currently right on the edge of either making the CFP or being left out completely. The Longhorns however gained a monstrous 27-17 victory over No. 3 Texas A&M last Friday night, adding a third top-10 win to their resume. Losses to No. 2 Ohio State, Florida, and No. 5 Georgia however have led many to believe that a three-loss Texas team should be left out of the Playoff.

College Football Hall of Famer Urban Meyer campaigned for Texas to be included in the College Football Playoff during Tuesday’s edition of ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd‘. Meyer believes that the Longhorns’ loss to Ohio State shouldn’t count against them.

“There’s six teams right now that are on that darn bubble,” Meyer said. “If Texas goes in, Notre Dame‘s out. To answer your question (should Texas make the College Football Playoff), I don’t know. I think Texas deserves to be in the Playoff, and I would not penalize that loss against Ohio State. You can’t do that, or you’re getting ready to see Old Dominion become a favorite among all these big-name teams like that.

“No-one cares. No-one’s saying a thing about Indiana‘s non-conference schedule. No-one, yet Texas made a decision to get on a plane and go play the No. 1 team in the country on the road. They got beat in a tough game. If they didn’t play that game, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Of course they’d be in.”

Steve Sarkisian said Texas missing CFP would be a ‘disservice’

Following the win over the rival Aggies on Saturday, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said it would be a ‘disservice to the sport’ for his team to miss the College Football Playoff.

“That team is undefeated, No. 3 three in the country. A lot of the pundits out there think they’re the No. 1 team in the country. We just beat them by 10,” Sarkisian said. “If you really look at the body of work, and you look at the Southeastern Conference of what we have to go through every week, you look at the non-conference schedule we played, to go to Ohio State in Week 1 and lose by seven when we outgained them by nearly 200 yards—we got a really good football team.

“It would be a disservice to our sport if this team is not a playoff team when we went and scheduled that non-conference game. Because if we’re a 10-2 team, it’s not a question. But, we were willing to go play that game. So, is that what college football is about? Don’t play anybody and just have a good record, or play the best and put the best teams in the playoff. And, we’re one of the best teams.”

The latest College Football Playoff Rankings will be released Tuesday night, and Texas will likely be the first or second team out.
