USC interim head coach Donte Williams stated that on Trojans Live that quarterback Jaxson Dart is “day-to-day” and is going to be held out for cautionary reasons.

Dart entered the game for the Trojans after starting quarterback Kedon Slovis exited on the opening possession of USC’s win over Washington State on Saturday.

In relief, the true freshman Dart passed for 391 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in the 45-14 victory.

Slovis is expected to practice during the week after X-rays and MRI results on his neck both came back negative. Slovis remains listed as the starting quarterback on the depth chart.

Although Slovis is listed as the starter, Williams has alluded to the idea of playing two quarterbacks. It’s possible we still see Dart in action when the Trojans play Oregon State this Saturday.

Slovis has started for USC since the 2019 season, taking over for J.T Daniels, who tore his ACL during the season-opener and later transferred to Georgia.

In three seasons, Slovis has thrown for 5,910 yards and 50 touchdowns. Through three games in 2021, Slovis threw for 487 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, completing 65% of his passes.

Jaxson Dart is a true freshman out of Corner Canyon High School in Kaysville, Utah. He is the No. 6 overall prospect in On3’s class of 2021 rankings. In addition to USC, Dart also held offers from BYU, Iowa State and Arizona State.

One of the most prestigious programs in college football history, USC has struggled in recent seasons. The Trojans have just one conference championship in the past 10 seasons and have never made the College Football Playoff.

Dart provided a glimpse at what the future could hold should he take over at quarterback. Perhaps the freshman can be the spark the team needs to find its way back into national relevance.
