USC‘s 48-41 road win over Colorado was highlighted by a second-half surge by the Buffaloes after being down by as many as 27 points at one point in the third quarter. The opposite side of that coin was the Trojans taking their foot off of the gas a little bit in the second act of the game, which even head coach Lincoln Riley admitted to this week.

This weekend the Trojans host Arizona, a team they’ve defeated in their last 10 meetings, and will look to never let up and play a complete game from start to finish. Which is what star quarterback Caleb Williams embodied in his answer when asked what the mindset of the offense will be as they take on the Wildcats.

“When we get out shots we have to execute, we have to be consistent and we gotta go out there and dominate and kill,” Williams said.

Executing on their shots has not been an issue for Williams and the USC offense, as his six touchdown passes last weekend added to his total of 21 on the season, which leads all quarterbacks in the nation.

On the other hand, the dominance and killer instinct could use some work as of late. The Trojans defeated their first three opponents by an average win margin of 42 points, but in their last two contests that number has dropped significantly down to 10.5 points.

Getting the win is and always will be the top priority, as USC currently remains undefeated with a 5-0 start to the season. But since Week 1 their ranking has dropped, entering the season as the No. 6 team and the country and now ranked No. 9 in the AP Top 25, which may have to do with their level of dominance taking a step back compared to other programs across the nation.

“We have to be the most physical team on the field at that time and in the country this week and weeks on out,” Williams said. “I’d say that’s the mindset.”

Williams and the USC offense will be competing against Arizona’s defense this weekend, but their also competing with the rest of the top programs in the country as many have their eyes set on securing one of the four coveted spots in the College Football Playoff.

A physical and dominant performance from the opening kickoff to the final whistle would certainly help the Trojans’ case, as their Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback will lead them into battle this Saturday as they host the Wildcats at 10:30 p.m. ET in a game airing on ESPN.
