Gayles was named a McDonald’s All-American this year — and finalized her commitment to USC last August. She originally had committed to USC under their former head coach Mark Trakh, but decommitted after he announced his retirement. Since new head coach Lindsay Gottlieb took over the program and met with Gayles, she has since recommitted to the Trojans.
“Aaliyah is one of the strongest, most resilient young people I have ever known,” said Gottlieb via ESPN. “I have no doubt she will continue to face this unfathomable situation with courage and resolve. We will continue to support her and her parents in every way that we possibly can.”
