Billy Edwards exited Saturday’s Big Ten opener against Maryland during the first quarter. After a deep pass, Edwards came up limping and was replaced by Danny O’Neil.

Edwards is dealing with a knee sprain suffered during Week 1. He was a game-time decision, but it appears as though he may not have been 100%. Still, Edwards likely did everything he could to suit up against Maryland. After all, he spent three seasons with the Terrapins from 2022-2024, including being the team’s starting QB during the 2024 season.

O’Neil would come in for Edwards. However, the drive would end in disaster with an interception. Maryland would capitalize and score on the following possession. The Terrapins scored on its first drive of the second quarter as well, putting Wisconsin in a hole early.

Fans of both programs can watch the rest of Saturday’s Big Ten matchup live on NBC and Peacock. For now, it’s the Danny O’Neil show against Maryland.

More on Billy Edwards injury

Billy Edwards will play against Maryland on Saturday, Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell revealed during the Badgers’ pregame show. Edwards has been dealing with a knee injury suffered during Week 1.

“Billy will go and we’ll see how comfortable he is,” Fickell told Mark Tauscher. “We have a plan both ways. But we’re cautiously optimistic. Just got to get it rolling.”

Edwards missed the past two games against both Middle Tennessee and Alabama, games which the Badgers split. His only playing time came during Week 1, where he went 6-of-13 passing for 68 yards before going down with injury.

If he had remained in the game, his presence would have made for an interesting storyline due to the fact that he transferred to Wisconsin from Maryland. He was the Terrapins’ starting quarterback last season, completing 65% of his passes for 2,881 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Maryland finished the season 4-8 overall. He ultimately spent three years with the program for 2022-2024 before moving on to Wisconsin during the offseason. However, his knee injury has kept him on the sideline for the majority of the early season. It appears to still be an issue during Week 4.

Additionally, Saturday will be the fifth all-time meeting between these two programs. However, Wisconsin holds the series advantage, having won all four of its previous meetings. The last game played between these two programs came back in 2022 at Camp Randall.
