Xavier guard Ryan Conwell enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Xavier guard Ryan Conwell has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. Conwell transferred to Xavier this past offseason after spending a year apiece at USF and Indiana State.
In his lone season with the Musketeers, Conwell averaged 16.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 45.0% from the field and 41.2% from beyond the arc. Conwell was Xavier’s second-leading scorer, trailing just behind Zach Freemantle, who averaged 16.8 points per game.
For his efforts, Conwell was named an All-Big East Third-Team selection. He had his best game of the season in Xavier’s narrow 89-87 loss to Marquette in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals.
In the loss, Conwell erupted for 38 points, three rebounds and three assists while shooting 13-18 from the field and 7-11 from beyond the arc. Notably, Conwell also dropped 34 points to boost Xavier to a win over Villanova earlier in the season.
Conwell averaged 11.5 points per game in Xavier’s two outings in the NCAA Tournament. However, he wasn’t nearly as efficient, only connecting on 7-of-his-17 attempts from the floor. After Xavier’s season-ending loss to Illinois, Conwell reflected on his growth during his first season with the Musketeers.
“I would say my first year at Xavier, it’s all a blessing, just the opportunity that was given to me,” Conwell said. “Just the competition I got to play against every given night. To play with a great of group guys for a great coaching staff, it was just all a blessing.

“I enjoyed it. I feel like I grew a lot as a basketball player but also just as a young man. I’m just excited for what’s to come.”
Ryan Conwell played high school basketball at Pike (IN), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 303 overall player and No. 36 combo guard in the 2022 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Conwell averaged 22.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.0 steals his senior season at Pike High School. In turn, he was named the 2022 Marion County (Indiana) Player of the Year.
Conwell likely won’t be the last player from Xavier to enter the transfer portal this offseason. Just two days after Xavier’s loss to Illinois in the NCAA Tournament, Musketeers head coach Sean Miller reportedly accepted an offer to be Texas‘ next head coach.
