4-star safety Donovan Webb sets commitment date

With a few official visits out of the way and a handful more to go, Frisco (Texas) Panther Creek four-star safety Donovan Webb now has a commitment date on the calendar.

On Sunday, Webb announced that he will make his decision July 2, set after he completes each of his official visits next month. Those trips include Kansas State (May 22), Ohio State (May 30), Michigan (June 6), LSU (June 13) and Notre Dame (June 20).

Webb already took visits to Colorado and TCU earlier this month, as well as Texas Tech and Baylor in April.

The 6-0, 180-pounder will be on a whirlwind of trips before his decision, but knows what he is looking for when he does choose a school.

“I’ve really been paying attention to who’s been the most consistent with making an effort to recruit me,” Webb told On3’s Steve Wiltfong back in March.

Webb hasn’t given anything away about which schools are trending at the top though, and it’s expected that the official visits will be a big deciding factor. Ohio State, despite being further away from home than a number of the other contenders, continues to make a strong impression on him. That included his visit this spring.

“Some takeaways would be hearing the coaches talk about how they plan to use me in their safety system and develop me into a NFL ready player,” he told Wiltfong. “The culture and the brotherhood was obvious. Watching some of the veteran players like Caleb Downs helping out the rookies and giving them tips during and after practice was inspiring.”

Notre Dame, meanwhile, has come to the party later but quickly established itself as a threat and landed an official visit.

“Yes, I am strongly considering Notre Dame,” Webb told BlueandGold.com. “They’re right on time!”

Now they, along with the other schools remaining on his calendar, will get a chance to make their final pitches over the next five weeks before decision time.

Webb is coming off a junior season where he recorded 120 tackles, five interceptions, two forced fumbles and nine pass breakups. He also pitched in on offense and special teams, and was named the Texas 7-4A D-1 Co-Defensive MVP.

He ranks as the nation’s No. 327 prospect and No. 33 safety, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
