Phillip Rivers' high school team celebrates his first touchdown with Colts
In one of the more impressive athletic feats in recent memory, 44-year-old Phillip Rivers returned to the NFL this weekend after an almost five-year retirement.
Earlier this week, Rivers was activated by the Indianapolis Colts, the team he was playing for when he left the game in 2020. Since then, he has been coaching at the high school level, including leading his son’s team at St. Michael Catholic in Fairhope, Alabama.
He was not originally expected to start in the team’s game versus Seattle on Sunday. But he ultimately got the nod.
His high school team, with their season ending late last month, gathered to watch him play on Sunday. And when Rivers threw his first touchdown of the day, his squad exploded in excitement for their head man.
One of his players, Noah Moss, posted a video to Twitter showing the reaction:
Through the first 35 minutes of the game, Rivers has completed 11 of 18 attempts for 88 yards and a touchdown, leading the Colts to 13-9 lead over the Seahawks.

Rivers just completed his fifth season as the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic, with the Cardinals’ season ending in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 4A state semifinals, losing to eventual champion Jackson, 44-23.
The Cardinals finished the season with a 13-1 record and with the pieces returning on both sides of the ball, will be a favorite to win Alabama’s Class 4A in 2026. His son, Gunner Rivers, just finished up his junior season at St. Michael Catholic. Rivers, who is a four-star rated quarterback and ranked No. 2 overall in Alabama and No. 7 in the country for the 2027 class, will return after throwing for 3,176 yards and 46 touchdowns this past Alabama high school football season.
The elder Rivers had a memorable career in the NFL, playing from 2004 to 2020, throwing for 63,440 yards and 421 touchdowns between his time with the Colts and Los Angeles Chargers, respectively.
