Hoiberg Question

A couple weeks ago I remember reading something about how it will be tough to keep this Nebrasketball team together after this year due to the eyeballs from their success. I’m wondering if the same can be said about Hoiberg? Proven college hoops coach (even if it took 5-7 years this time) and coached & played in NBA. Could be an enticing coach to try and poach if I’m a blue blood looking for a new coach this off season. I want to be clear - I do not want this to happen, just something I have been thinking about during our unprecedented run. Am I wrong to be slightly worried? I’m planning to just enjoy the ride while it’s here.

Of course winning comes with downsides. But doesn't it feel good to have a coach that other schools want? Fred has said before that this is his last coaching job and at the end of the day its his decision so all we can do is take him by his word and make sure he has what he needs to maintain a high level of success.

I thought about losing some players and Coach Hoiberg too. But you know what I'm not going to worry about something I can't control just going to enjoy this year one game at time and soak it all in.

Or maybe, he does a Bo Ryan and takes Nebraska on a 20 year run like Wisconsin had.

Do recall Fred saying Nebraska would be his last stop. My take, depending on how this season ends, the possibility of retirement would be greater than him leaving for another job. Went out with a bang. Sam is out of eligibility. Always has that lingering health issue. Tired of the NIL era and having to reconstruct a roster every year. But as you stated. Just going to live in the moment and enjoy this ride! I’m personally past waiting for the rug to get pulled out from under me as a fan. And what happens after the season happens. If Fred is back next season, one would think he would have an easier time acquiring talent. Has lots of success stories with Mast, Williams, Sandfort.

Nebraska will pay Fred top 5 money without a concern if that is required to keep him. Players are going to be lining up to play for him this offseason. My biggest concern is having the NIL funds to cover Frager, Sandfort, Berke & Leo.

Saw some MSU chatter about Hoiberg being Izzo's replacement if he decides to retire. I just don't see it, I think he's really got it going here and if he wins a single game in the tourney he becomes a god here. MSU is championship or bust every year. Him leaving is the least of my concern, him being done coaching is more of a concern. And as far as players yeah they might lose some but I think they have a pretty good system installed of finding and identifying the talent and type of players they need. If Fred does move on Nate Loenser would be my first call.

You would hope he would have some loyalty after Nebraska by all rights should've fired him after year 3. If we had fired him, his career was probably done as a head coach. He also remembers how bad it was getting fired by the Bulls and the first three years here. Who says he wants to possibly go through that again at a more prestigious program. He gets that NCAA tourney win this year and he's safe here for the next 5 years at a minimum.

I'm pretty sure he retires here Can you ever make enough money that more money somewhere else is not a concern?

I've heard Fred loves it here and wants to be here for the rest of his career, but you never know.

My biggest concern is losing Nate Loenser. He’s a key element in the success we’re experiencing and would be very difficult to replace. I have no idea if he aspires to be a head coach, but I assume that is the case.

Agree. Fred has said numerous times this is his last stop. We are paying him very well and will continue to do so. His family goes to all the home games. I’d be incredibly shocked if he left. Pryce and family love Fred and his development is partly due to Fred. We paid him good money to come here so he is not being short changed. I imagine he will get a nice bump like Gary and BW got. Frager will get a real big bump I’m sure but he loves and wants to be here so we should get a home town discount. We will still need to open up the checkbook but I have no doubt we will.

From an NIL perspective, I am hoping that those Husker fans with discretionary dollars will make it extremely hard for Pryce and Frager to find a better landing spot. Guys like Rhymes and the incoming freshman will demand some dollars as well. I assume that Rienk and Lawrence are two of the three highest paid guys on the roster today so some of that shuffling should help the situation going into 2026-27.

Keep the core together, give Loenser a bit more money and AHC title, and then splurge on a good Lead Guard and we're golden next year I got to talking about it after the Oregon game (and a couple beers) with my buddy. Our rotation next year Starters 1- Transfer 2- Pryce 3- Frager 4- Berke 5- Oogie Bench 1- Cale 2- Essegian 3- Rice 4- Transfer 5- Curtis Splurge and get a good lead guard (Rowan Brumbaugh or Joshua Dent maybe?) and we would already have a nasty 8-man rotation with Cale, Essegian, and Rice coming off the bench

Washington freshman big named Hannes Steinbach is who I would love to see Nebraska get as mast replacement.

Do you think Oogie will be back next year? I don't remember where I read this, but I recently read somewhere that he's ready to go back to Lithuania and start his professional career. Which reading that it now makes sense why they're pushing so hard for him to play this year. Also, regarding your 10-man rotation you have there. I think Lanier will be in the rotation.

I've thought the same. However, I'm sure he'll get paid a lot of money to go to a big school. I'd assume he's making a pretty good amount already as it's rumored Washington spent a lot of money on their basketball roster this year.

Did you read this during this basketball season or last year? I saw this idea floating around last year or the year before. I gotta be honest—given the Izzo-Hoiberg family friendship, MSU's blue-blood status, and probably $$$, MSU is a one that concerns me. But let's enjoy this run and see what happens!

Not convinced Oogie is the answer…. I think you use the success this year to go find a dude for that spot

I could see retirement too. If he did that, he probably wouldn’t announce it until late in the offseason so Loenser would get a shot as interim HC.

Pretty sure Steinbach would cost more than our whole team. I think he got a huge deal to go to Washington this year

Fred isn’t leaving guys. I chatted with his aunt at the Oregon game. Lots of extended family attend the games and live close. That’s a big factor. Carol loves it here too. NIL should not be a concern - especially if we stop paying backup safeties and 3rd string tight ends double what Frager is currently making now….

Wasn't there a thing last year with foreign athletes not being able to get paid via NIL without violating their student visa? How did that get resolved? @Robin Washut @Sam Ojeda @Bobby Schneider

@Robin Washut hasnt commented yet, but he’s been adamant that Fred isn’t leaving. He will not be taking another job, and his family loves Lincoln I also see absolutely 0 reason he retires or steps away unless his heart issue worsens. Barring something unforeseen, Fred will be back at NU for a minimum of a decade. Hell. Next year they bring bsck Pryce, Frager, Berke and Jacobsen minimum, with imo one of the most underrated HS classes in the country. That’s already enough of a team to compete again

Yeah right after the MSU games some twitter pages were hinting at Hoiberg potentially being a nice replacement. Idk I guess I just really believe him when he says he wants this to be his last stop. As other's have said I am more afraid of him wanting to just be done coaching and potentially ride this high off into the sunset with his sons.
