I'm sorry, but it's been over a week. The fan base is starting to erode. I really like Self, but at this point I really don't give a crap. I just want to know what the hell is going on to help the team.

Has Peterson decided if he’s coming back next year or not?

The thing I don’t get is people don’t decide to retire in just one week. He should have been thinking about this since the last incident. Just because we lost in the first weekend in the tournament, that shouldn’t really play into this. This is just a weird series of events and definitely should have been planned for ahead of time.

I heard he sat down to think about the decision and got a brain cramp. There is no timetable for how long recovery will take.

I feel like this is taking longer than expected. I understand it's a HUGE decision and I truly want Self to make the best choice for him, but this shouldn't take much longer. With the comments he made after the St John's game he halted everything until he goes public with his choice. Unfortunately the way things work nowadays with recruiting every day counts. I want him to feel good about his decision but this is the first domino that needs to fall, otherwise we're stagnant, and I know he understands this. There's probably more moving parts than we realize but hopefully we hear something in the next couple days.

I think if HCBS health status were a significant factor in whether he would return as coach then that decision would have already been made and we would know. Instead I think he is trying to decide if he wants to continue to deal with all the hassles of NIL and the portal. Additionally I think he is seeing what additional support he can get from the Administration and the big donors. Hopefully he will borrow a phrase from General Douglas McArthur and say " I shall return".

He could return to KU, but he could also go to the NBA or he could enter the portal. His decision could come very soon, but he doesn't have to be in a rush so it could take a longer time. A lot of options are on the table. Most importantly, heard he was watching a soccer game recently.

There are still two obvious options. We are waiting for a coach still in the tournament to replace a retiring Bill Self, or he is coming back. Waiting to announce the retirement is respectful to the sitting coach to avoid a distraction at the Final Four. Retiring early and then waiting is probably more of a problem than waiting to announce the retirement, which is why in that scenario we would be waiting to announce. If this were the case we are looking at Lloyd, May, Underwood, or Hurley. We would need an entirely different thread to look at the positives, negatives, and logistics of those options. The "Bill is coming back" option appears to be the odds on favorite. Maybe Stokes will announce he is committing to Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks at the McD game for some publicity. Maybe Bill really needed to go over things with his family before he really knew he felt right about running it back. It can't go on much longer because we are going to need to be very active in the portal once it opens.

Such timelines rarely optimally align with fan expectations.

I think the OP feels as if the pocket change he spends on the Slant puts him in the position of being entitled to know what Self will do. If anyone thinks Self has not been in touch with recruits, then I truly don’t know what to tell you. Not everyone plays this stuff out in the media. I know we’ve come to believe that’s the way it works, but just because some in the political world use the media to manipulate, I’m happy to wait until Self is ready to speak… until then all the speculation is silly.

You mean the editor of this site who is paid to seek out this information?

I would hope that if he's walking away AND we are looking outside that he's already let Goff know and that search is quietly underway. The fact that this has now spilled into this week leads me to believe that if he isn't coaching that JV has already been selected if he decides he can't go again. But that's purely speculation on my part.

Jesus Christ, entitled much? What the hell does that even mean-the fan base is starting to erode? Are people starting to go out in public and say "if Self doesn't decide and announce his decision to me personally within the next four days, I am not a KU fan any more?" Calm down. It'll all happen in due time, and there will still be more than enough KU fans when it does.

And you don't think it has been?

The longer it drags out, I would think that means retirement and we are likely hiring May or Lloyd as the replacement. Not announcing anything this week would be most respectful way to handle things for the coaches that still have teams in. Would put lots of pressure on the new guy coming in, as the portal opens next week.

If it was JV, why would we be waiting? That makes zero sense. If he is the coach, announce it loud and proud and let him get to work. He would be working the recruits, working the existing players, building his staff. To know that JV is going to be the coach, but delay giving him the keys, is completely illogical. At this point, the only reason I could see JV ending up as the coach is if Bill drops the bombshell late and Goff has made zero plans for that possibility and every legitimate target says no and we have to settle for JV because the portal window is open and we need to be active immediately. JV would logically be the fall back, emergency escape hatch. I guess I believe that Self will do what is best for the program, and dragging this out with no plan in place and nothing going on behind the scenes is not good for the program. That is why I think he is either stalling so that when he retires we can have an immediate transition to his replacement after they coach in the final four, or he is coming back, in which case he can time it however he wants, it is his show. He likely already has some idea of what will happen with the existing roster and met with them following our loss in the tournament, and he likely cannot do much until the portal opens and we see what their value is on the open market. He is probably staying in contact with the incoming recruits either way. Other than coddling insecure fans, an immediate public announcement is not critical, if he is staying on. If he is retiring, Goff is already working behind the scenes and this delay is part of that process. If we name JV the coach it basically means we completely sh_t the bed.

The North Carolina coaching hire seems to be radio silence as well.

He was actually scouting the game, as he is going to be announced as the new head coach of the KU men's soccer team. They have to delay the announcement to make it in conjunction with our move to the B1G conference. We needed additional sports to meet the conference requirements. Also being announced at that time, the east side of the football stadium will be four tiers to meet the seating requirement of the B1G.

Maybe I am the one whose perspective is skewed, but the thought of Lloyd, May, Underwood or Hurley coming to KU makes no sense at all IMO. Each of them can achieve everything they hope for just as easily and quickly where they are. Hurly already has 2 NC's and the others are at places with equal support as they can get here.

I thought the post you replied to was about Peterson.
