Sometimes you win by losing.

I know this may sound crazy, but we may have won by losing Smothers. If he had stayed, who would we have lost? We lost Brown to Texas because of Smothers. In two years Smothers has been at Oklahoma, NC State, Alabama and now Texas. Did anyone notice that Oklahoma did not try to get Smothers back. In the portal, it is not about who you get, it is about what do you get with them. I am not saying that Smothers would have been a cancer, but a locker room is about more than money. There is a reason DeBoer did not try to stop Smothers from going to Austin. I do not know the reason; however, I do know that $2 million will help us get linemen that we Really need. We have adequate running backs.

We still wanted smothers even after the texas visit. He was our first guy in the portal, a top priority. Dont cope, it was a loss. We got beat it is what it is tho move on.

He wasn’t a priority. He was an opportunity. He contacted us and it didn’t work out - had a messy way of not working out, but that’s still all it was.

he was the first player we targeted in the portal and we offered him significant money. thats called a priority, regardless of how you want to cope about it. we move on tho

I really don't get the gnashing over Smothers. My only regret is the loss of the Hollywood x2 jokes.

We obviously wanted him and were aggressive in trying to get him to come here. He showed his character and I don't believe he would have put the team goals ahead of his own. We tried to get him and lost, but it might end up being a good thing. Both things can be true.

I’m not surprised that teams are paying $2M+ for players.

well if we weren't low balling him like they say were weren't then around 2M would have beaten our offer

If you mean if we don’t hand out NIL deals like rev share?

no I’m sayin everything that was said was that we had a very good offer on the table for him and tried to make it better. That means 1-1.5M for a RB or else we don’t know what a good offer is. So if Texas beat our offer 1.5-2M makes sense.

I’m sure we were at $1M or higher, maybe even $1.5M. Sounds like there might have been some bidding with someone else or Texas wanted to shut it down. I doubt you go back on your word for a 10% bump but who knows. Shannon described it as ā€œFU money.ā€ It’s likely they were much higher. Doubt double but I could see a 50% higher offer or more.

It’s always great to have a home run hitter at running back, but I’d prefer having the guys who can press the hole and an o-line that can create them.

Why would a RB have been our "top guy"? That is not a position of need.

that’s why I’m saying 2M actually makes sense. It was somewhere in that ball park or we really aren’t offering competitive deals which I don’t think is true.

I could see if he got $2M but you think we offered $2M and they said F it and did $3M? Maybe, just seems high. Maybe one day it will be more transparent but that may hurt us more than help.

i think initially we were around 1-1.1M and Texas offered more, we matched, and they went higher than we were willing to go. Just based off what the market is and how this negotiation went my guess is we have 1-1.5M to give to a really good starting RB in the portal depending on how high we want to go. but yeah we don't know for sure because there is no transperancy in this stuff which is much needed but wont happen till there is a CBA. But I think it's fair to assume that we are offering market rates and teams are exceeding it to beat us.
