We, too, would appreciate an explanation

Passive aggressive payback for the staredown that happened moments prior? 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️

I noticed the same thing in real time, then the ball was deflected and I forgot all about it. Completely flabbergasted.

I have a different take on this. There’s literally zero chance that Duke is scoring there. You catch it and the game is over. Probably a very smart move to have him back off a bit so as to not do something stupid like get a tech for crossing the inbounds line or knocking the ball out of the passer’s hand. There’s poor officiating everywhere but I think Ayers was advising him not to take an unnecessary risk, not trying to tilt an impossible play in Duke’s favor.

Pg. 105, Rule 25 (b) states: If the Dook Blue Devils find themselves losing with 1 second or less on the clock, a referee must ensure the player designated has a clear path to inbound the ball in order to provide them with the best chance to come away victorious.

Roger Ayers — one of the best in the game. Lost his Final Four assignment because of this, too.

That’s a great point, we don’t know what he was trying to accomplish. But this isn’t church league… he shouldn’t be coaching, he should be enforcing the rules. And the rules don’t require the player to be 5 feet off the baseline!

I get it, and I think officiating is generally poor anyway. Just an alternative take that it may not have been to give Duke an advantage. Just speculation on my part. Ayers is normally one of the better ones. If it was Groover then yeah 100% trying to help Duke 😂

Telling a player where to be on the floor is the coach's job. Ref has no business doing that.

I saw that while watching live. And was like if they get a clean pass and make a shot that kid will be killed by the Media. I had no clue the ref was like stay back. Needs to be an investigation

WTH was that?!?!? Doesn’t a defender have every right to defend the entire court?!?!

That’s a very good point. This is an important discussion for any rules peeps associated with not just the NCAA Tournament, but NCAA basketball at large. I’ve never seen a ref tell a guy to keep moving back, only in the instances they are too close to the inbound line and can get dinged for that. Totally weird situation in that moment.

Wonder if we'll get any official statement or explanation on this.

I don't know if Ayers did it on purpose or not, but what I do know is that guy's lack of skill in using a rewind button is frustrating as hell lol
