Year 1 expectations?

Kiffin hasn’t said specifically that we won’t be good in year 1 obviously, but he has left multiple clear hints that he wants patience and that year 1 might not go the way fans hope. And to that I say if you don’t think you can compete at a high level this year then why did you make Jordan Seaton the highest paid offensive lineman in the history of college football when this is a player that will be in your program for just 2026 before he goes to the NFL? If this is a multi year rebuild why didn’t you did what Florida did and go cheap at the quarterback position instead of paying a monster amount of money to get Sam Leavitt? We paid ole miss to get princewill out of his contract. This very well could just be coach speak, but Kiffins comments have me a little worried about this coming season.

Most transfers LSU took have multiple years of eligibility remaining. It feels pretty obvious that they’re trying to win this year but undoubtedly lay the groundwork for a SEC title in year 2 or 3. Btw, Leavitt has 2 years remaining. Take some Pepto

And I completely understand that and am obviously not saying championship or bust this year or anything like that at all, but I do think it is fair to expect you should be right there till the end in the playoff race and one of the better teams in the SEC with a 40 million dollar roster.

Lane took this job because he believes that with his staff, systems, process, etc that LSU can be where Ohio State currently is, where the expectation every year is to be in the top 3-4 teams and making the playoff is pretty much a given. He believes he can get there in year 2-3. Doesn’t mean he thinks we will suck in year 1. We may go 10-2, win a round 1 game and lose in round 2. That’s better than anything Brian Kelly did but not where he expects to end up

Where did Lane say he doesn’t expect us to be one of the better teams in the SEC next year? To make it “worth it” would mean a semi-finals appearance or better considering that’s where Ole Miss was. Feels like a big reach to have a final 4 appearance as the floor in year 1

It's a team full of transfers, it can either go like 2024 Ole Miss or 2025 Ole Miss. Both were stacked with talent. 2024 couldn't put it all together and lost 3 games. 2025 did put it all together and damn near made the championship game.

Playoff team. I get it’s Year 1, and the schedule is not easy, but the money spent on this roster I think 9-3 or 10-2 is attainable. Have to split OM/A&M at a minimum. If you lose OM can’t let that roll into A&M game. You get Bama and Texas at home which is great. That Auburn game looms large right before the bye too.

Brother if it goes like 2024 ole miss and we go 9-3 I am very much ok with that with 9 sec games. Im talking worse then that and kiffin keeps throwing stuff out there for protection if this season does go south

The quote was in comparison to Ole Miss, who has a 24 year old quarterback and a defensive line full of in-state talent (Echols, Franklin, Perkins) better than they typically have. Ole Miss in 2027 likely won't be as good as it'll be in 2026.

I just don't think that's what he's doing though. People will still talk shite going 9-3 after spending this much on the roster.

You’re reaching here. There is nothing there to suggest that Lane thinks we may to 7-5. He isn’t trying to protect himself from that

Lane has said this in a few times now, the first time in one of those press conferences I brushed it aside but after saying it multiple times I am more pessimistic about this season. I just wanted to post this on here and hear yall thoughts about it

I like the comment. It will push this current team for 2026. If he goes in saying how good we are or expecting a title in year 1 that new unit will get complacent...just like the 2025 team

Oh those are absolutely not my expectations and I don’t think that is a realistic expectation for anyone, maybe Texas or Oregon with Dante back, but even Texas can go 9-3 this year again they have an absolutely brutal schedule which is why I push back on people talking about lsus hard schedule, literally everyone in the SEC is going to have a hard schedule with 9 SEC games. If we get to 9-3 this year I’m satisfied. Anything better than that is amazing. But if there are lsu people that are mad this year if we go 9-3 I think those would be the more delusional ones, there is a world where we could be in the playoffs at 9-3 and probably would deserve to be but unfortunately a g5 team is gonna take up one of the spots.

With the money spent on the roster this should be a playoff team. The boosters that just gave lane $40M to put this roster together are also expecting a playoff appearance this year. If we don’t make the playoffs you won’t have $40M available for next years team, donor fatigue is real and we haven’t had a bit of success in the NIL era, don’t turn that around and you could look like Florida state in a few years (we won’t get to that point but that’s what happens when your boosters are tired of paying money to not win).

Yeah you’re reaching. You’re more pessimistic because Lane said we will be better in year 2 than year 1? Some things never change
