Angel Reese, Dawn Staley lead the way as SEC unveils 2024 women's basketball honors

The SEC has announced its honors for the 2024 women’s basketball season, with some of the biggest names in the sport leading the way.

Angel Reese of LSU has been named the SEC Player of the Year, while Dawn Staley of South Carolina has been named the SEC Coach of the Year.

Reese has started 26 games for the Tigers this season and is averaging 19 points and 13 rebounds per game.

Staley’s South Carolina team is undefeated and the unanimous No. 1 team in the country after being ranked No. 6 in the preseason. The Gamecocks lost all five starters off of last year’s team.

Elsewhere, LSU’s Mikaylah Williams was honored as the SEC Freshman of the Year. South Carolina’s Kamilla Cardoso was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Leilani Correa from Florida was named the Sixth Woman of the Year. And finally, Missouri’s Mama Dembele was named the Scholar Athlete of the Year.

In addition, the SEC also announced its first-team All-SEC, second-team All-SEC, all-freshman team and all-defensive team.

The SEC women’s basketball honors were released a day before the start of the SEC women’s basketball tournament.

Play will get underway from Greenville, South Carolina on Wednesday, March 6 with No. 12 seed Kentucky facing No. 13 seed Georgia. No. 11 seed Florida will also face No. 14 seed Missouri on Wednesday.

No. 5 seed Tennessee, No. 6 seed Vanderbilt, No. 7 seed Auburn, No. 8 seed Mississippi State, No. 9 seed Texas A&M and No. 10 seed Arkansas will all begin play on Thursday.

The top four seeds in No. 1 South Carolina, No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Ole Miss and No. 4 Alabama received a double bye. Those four teams will begin play on Friday.
