The NCAA Tournament is just under two months away, with plenty big-time matchups between this weekend’s slate and Selection Sunday. However, every result for teams across the bracketology field can shift the analytic numbers, the head-to-head comparisons, or the strength of resume across the board.

Bracketology insights aims to explain the various ways that Saturday’s results will impact Sunday’s bracketology update, and each conversation about the field moving forward. From matchups between projected top seeds, to jockeying across the bubble, stay up to date with what the game means in a bigger picture.

Saturday’s lineup is headlined by multiple showdowns atop the best conferences in college basketball, primarily Texas Tech vs. Houston and Purdue vs. Illinois. The SEC also delivered multiple bubble-defining games to check in on.

Check back throughout the night for more insights on the latest results.

Texas Tech vs. Houston

In the most recent bracketology update, Houston rose up the 2-seed line and into the fifth-overall spot. Texas Tech, meanwhile, entered as a 4-seed and the No. 16 overall team in the field.

With one matchup already played between the two, Houston entered with an advantage in the Big 12 standings as well, which is now neutralized by a 90-86 win by the Red Raiders. A far different look than the 69-65 game which went the other way in Houston earlier this month.

For Houston, the loss will likely see them shuffle down the board on the 2-seed line, without costing them a shot at a 1-seed nod given the results by teams above. However, the path toward that goal does get slightly more difficult, as teams with equal or better records project to jump them. The good news for the Cougars is that a fall to the 3-seed line appears highly unlikely this weekend.

Texas Tech could get a big boost, but will not catch Houston and surpass them on the seed-line despite a head-to-head win. Splitting the season series does help boost the resume, and with 90 points on the board — nearly 30 above Houston’s average given up — the offensive numbers project to give them a massive boost across analytic models. Other results will determine whether they reach the 3-seed line by Sunday morning, but they are certain to at least receive a more favorable regional site in the updated projections.

Purdue vs. Illinois

In Thursday’s bracketology projections, Purdue moved down the list of 2-seeds and landed as the No. 6 team after looking primed for a 1-seed jump before losing against UCLA. Illinois continued to hold steady on the 3-seed line in a group of teams looking for their opportunity to jump up the board.

The resumes slightly leaned in favor of Purdue entering the matchup, as they sat 6-2 in Q1 opportunities and undefeated below that mark. Illinois sat 5-3 in Q1 opportunities and also remained perfect in lower-quadrant games. This result brings the two much closer together.

The result marks the second-straight loss for Purdue this week, setting them up to fall again compared to their peers atop bracketology. Still a contender to remain on the 2-seed line, a drop into the 3-seed mix is very much in play as they fall to three losses on the season. A head-to-head loss against Illinois further complicates the seeding, as the Fighting Illini could get an extra boost.

Illinois, meanwhile, looks likely to test the rigidity of the 2-seed line now. They already sit inside the Top 10 across most analytic models, and the resume now matches up with Purdue. After entering the weekend as the No. 11 overall seed, there is a viable path up with two losses from teams above.

Bubble movement

  • First Four Out candidate Texas knocks off Georgia 87-67, positioning itself well for a conversation about the Last Four In. The Longhorns entered the day ranked No. 43 in the NET, and adds a Q1 win over the No. 24 team to the resume.
  • Next Four Out candidate Missouri took down fringe bubble team Oklahoma with an OT game-winner, keeping them in the mix to get a mention on Sunday. The Sooners, however, look even further out of the picture as they project to drop from their No. 75 spot in the NET after a loss to the No. 69 team.
  • Last Four In team Seton Hall dropped a game against No. 112 NET team DePaul, delivering a brutal blow to their resume as a Q2 loss which drops them to 5-6 in the top half of the quadrant system. Four of those losses come in Q2.
  • A pair of Next Four Out contenders faced off in the Big 12, with Baylor hosting TCU. The Horned Frogs held onto a lead and will climb the latter as a result, but Baylor is now 1-6 in conference play and plummeting out of the picture quickly.
