Cale Gundy confirms Mike Gundy will continue coaching, plans to join him at next stop

Mike Gundy is apparently not done coaching after his firing from Oklahoma State on Tuesday. According to his brother, former Oklahoma assistant Cale Gundy, Mike plans to find a new job and continue coaching.
That wasn’t the only bomb that Cale Gundy dropped, however. He also said he hopes to get back into coaching as well and join his brother at his next stop.
”Hell yes and I’m going with him,” Cale said to On3’s Brett McMurphy when asked whether Mike would continue to coach.
Cale Gundy has been out of coaching for the past three years after he was forced to resign from his job at OU in 2022 amid a controversy. The coach grabbed a player’s iPad during a film session and read a word that was described “racially charged” in front of the team.
Prior to that incident, Cale Gundy spent more than two decades on the Sooners’ staff and was also a quarterback for the team from 1990-93. He currently is a co-host on “The Middle of the Day Show” on local radio station WWLS The Sports Animal 98.1 FM in Oklahoma.
Mike Gundy leaves Oklahoma State as the winningest coach in program history with an overall record of 190-70 across his career. He also has one Big 12 Championship and a 12-6 record in bowl games, including two Fiesta Bowl wins. He was named the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year in 2011 after directing the Cowboys to a 12-1 record.

However, since playing in the Big 12 title game in 2023, the program has been on a massive free fall. The Cowboys went 3-9 in the 2024 season and failed to win a single conference game. They have lost 11 straight games against FBS opponents dating back to last year.
That forced Tuesday’s decision from Oklahoma State to let him go as it looks to get the program back moving on an upward trajectory. The coach will receive a buyout of $15 million.
However, it seems based on the comments from Cale Gundy that Mike Gundy feels he still has something left to give the game. It remains to be seen exactly where he would be able to draw interest, but he certainly has the resume for it after his work in Stillwater. With his fate now sealed, he can begin thinking about what that next chapter might look like.
