CBS Sports shakes up Top 25 QB rankings after Week 4 of College Football

CBS Sports shook up its Top 25 quarterback rankings following Week 4 of college football and there were some massive changes. In fact, there’s a new No. 1 QB in the country!
It should be noted that Oklahoma QB John Mateer was not listed among these rankings from CBS. Mateer underwent hang surgery and could miss three weeks, give or take. The injury was not mentioned, nor was Mateer included in the list at the time of this writing.
So without Mateer, Oklahoma turns to Michael Hawkins, but he’ll have quite a bit to go in order to climb these rankings. So let’s dive into CBS’ top 25.
1. Fernando Mendoza, Indiana (+29)
Mendoza currently leads all of college football with 14 touchdown passes. He has 975 yards, zero interceptions and a 76.8% completion percentage as well for undefeated Indiana.
The former Cal QB is playing by far the best he’s ever played. So through four weeks, he’s vaulted up the rankings and is the top ranked quarterback in the country, per CBS.
2. Josh Hoover, TCU (+6)

Hoover’s building off a quietly big season in 2024. He’s on pace for the best QB play of his career as a redshirt junior for the Horned Frogs.
This season, Hoover has 1,000 yards, 11 touchdowns, two interceptions and a 68% completion percentage. TCU is currently 3-0 too and Hoover jumps up to the second spot.
3. Haynes King, Georgia Tech (-1)
A sixth-year senior, King is playing at a high level to give Georgia Tech some ACC title hopes. As far as the current QB rankings, he only dropped a spot due to the huge rise of the two above him.
King has 515 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions and a 69.7% completion percentage. Not only that, he has 274 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground.
4. Marcel Reed, Texas A&M
Texas A&M will go as far as Reed can take them this season. The Aggies have a solid QB under center though as he stood pat at the No. 4 spot.
This year, through three games, Reed had 869 yards, nine touchdowns, one interception and a 58.6% completion percentage. Reed also has 142 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
5. Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss (+26)

Chambliss took over for Austin Simmons and he might not give the job back. Is this a Wally Pipp situation at QB for Ole Miss?
Chambliss has been very, very impressive so far. He has 719 yards, four touchdowns, zero interceptions and 67.7% completion percentage, to go along with 195 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
6. Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt (-1)
Pavia is ever the showman but he’s a productive QB for Vanderbilt, so he’s a triple threat! (See George Lopez sitcom for that joke). Anyway, Vanderbilt is a top 20 team with him under center and there are noticeable improvements from last season.

Pavia has 890 yards, eight touchdowns, two interceptions and a career-high 73.9% completion percentage. He also has 215 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
7. Jayden Maiava, USC (+5)
Maiava stepped up when he had to and it paid off for USC’s offense in 2025. Lincoln Riley has done it again at QB!
In his first full year as a starter, his numbers are already starting to pass 2024 entirely! He has 1,223 yards, nine touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 70.8% completion percentage. He also has four rushing touchdowns.
8. Taylen Green, Arkansas (-2)

It’s a shame that Green is a top 10 QB per CBS but Arkansas could be headed for another season where they don’t make the postseason. That could result in the end of head coach Sam Pittman as well.
Green moved down two posts this week, but he’s been impressive this year. He has 1,191 yards, 12 touchdowns, four interceptions, a 64.3% completion percentage, 360 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
9. Thomas Castellanos, Florida State
Castellanos backed up his trash talk by beating Alabama and has been impressive since he transferred from Boston College. FSU is certainly getting better QB play this year than last.
This year, Castellanos has 594 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a 71.1% completion percentage. He also has 139 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
10. Byrum Brown, USF
Brown stole the scene a few weeks ago, helping lead USF to an upset over Florida. After getting waxed by Miami, the Bulls bounced back with a 63-14 win over South Carolina State.
The Bulls’ QB has 983 yards, six touchdowns, two interceptions and a 62.9% completion percentage this season. He also has 120 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
