Following an eventful week in college baseball, D1Baseball updated its top 25 rankings on Monday morning, and a new No. 1 has emerged: For the first time in program history, the Tennessee Volunteers have taken the No. 1 spot.

Tennessee will have a chance to leave no doubts in its No. 1 ranking this coming weekend, as the Volunteers look to defend their first-ever No. 1 ranking with a three-game road series against in-state rival Vanderbilt, which ranks No. 9 in this week’s D1Baseball top 25.

Tennessee takes No. 1 spot after emphatic sweep

Tennessee earned the No. 1 spot for the first time in the eight-year history of D1Baseball’s top 25 rankings, and it was for good reason: not only did the Volunteers sweep then-No. 1 Ole Miss in Oxford, a wildly impressive feat in itself, they did so by outscoring the Rebels 26-7. It was complete dominance by the Volunteers, who are now the odds-on betting favorite to win the College World Series, too. Meanwhile, with the loss, Ole Miss took a significant tumble, going from No. 1 to No. 10.

Ole Miss wasn’t alone, though, as 11 ranked teams lost their weekend series, causing massive upheaval in the D1Baseball top 25 rankings. Perhaps most notably, in losing two of three on the road at South Carolina, Vanderbilt fell to No. 9. As for why that matters? The Commodores will host the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers this weekend, an in-state rivalry that could very well be one of the best regular-season series of the season.

Arkansas made the climb to No. 2 after winning two of three on the road at Missouri, while Oregon State moved up three spots and Virginia moved up six spots after road series wins at California and Wake Forest, respectively.

Louisville and TCU both saw their rankings climb seven spots, as Louisville came in at No. 11 and TCU came in at No. 12, while LSU had a huge rise — the Tigers moved up eight spots to No. 13 after winning a road series at Florida, which caused the Gators to move down to No. 14
