Doug Gottlieb announces decision to step away from radio to focus on UW Green Bay, will continue podcast
Doug Gottlieb‘s Green Bay Phoenix officially surpassed their win total from all of last season (four) with a 85-75 win over IU Indy (its fifth of the season) last Thursday. It then earned the biggest win of the Gottlieb era Wednesday night, downing 8-3 UC Santa Barbara 67-64 Wednesday night at the Kress Center.
After opening the season with a 1-5 record, Green Bay is 4-2 in its last six games. Following the win on Wednesday night, Gottlieb revealed that ‘The Doug Gottlieb Show‘ would be put on a hiatus in order to focus on coaching and his family.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time, so I know these kids are owed a fully dedicated coach,” Gottlieb said. “I know I’m fully dedicated, but you only get one shot at this thing. If there’s any ounce of lack of preparation or any ounce of fatigue… I mean this is gonna sound crazy, but last week we go down to [Indianapolis]. Because of the timing of my show, the bus left without me and I flew. I don’t think that’s what I want to do as a coach. I’ll still be doing podcasts and iHeart has been amazing about it, so we’ll transition to a different version of it. It’ll still be the same stuff, but I’ll do it off office hours and at home.”
Doug Gottlieb says he is ‘building something cool’ at Green Bay
All of last season, the Phoenix totaled just four Division I victories. Prior to conference play kicking off this season however, Green Bay has already reached that mark.

“I can take days off and I can have a life, but you know, Thanksgiving I had all three of my kids in town and I had to work on a Friday because I wanted to bank those holiday days for when we travel or work on game prep or whatever,” Gottlieb continued. “It’s really hard. It’s going to be a bit of a financial hit, but I’ll work through it. I’ve been blessed beyond all measure. But, the ‘The Doug Gottlieb Show‘ on radio in the afternoon, as of now, we’re going to take a break from it. It’s just, I’ve got to have a life and I’ve got to be here for these kids. I’ve got to really dig in because we’re building something cool here. We’re building something cool here.”
Gottlieb, who has been a staple in the sports media world since 2002, has hosted ‘The Doug Gottlieb Show‘ since 2006. Since then, the show has moved from ESPN to CBS to FOX, where it currently resides. This made the move by Green Bay to hire the former Notre Dame/Oklahoma State standout as its new head coach prior to the 2024/25 season surprising, but Gottlieb has been juggling both responsibilities since then.
With some progress showing within the program, Gottlieb appears to be getting even more serious about his responsibilities as a head coach.
