According to On3’s Pete Nakos, former Louisiana-Monroe quarterback Hunter Herring has committed to play for Alex Golesh and the Auburn Tigers. However, a position change will take place once Herring gets down on the Plains. He will remain on offense but switch over to the tight ends room for Auburn.

Herring played in 10 games last season for ULM, getting time in multiple roles. One of those being quarterback, where 10 attempts are on the stat sheet. Five of those were completed for 110 yards, resulting in a touchdown and two interceptions.

The Warhawks were not afraid to use him elsewhere, giving Herring 20 carries on the season. Two touchdowns are the highlight, adding 57 yards. Through the air as a receiver is another part of the equation, hauling in four receptions for 17 yards.

Versatility is something coaches dream about. Herring certainly provided that for ULM but once arriving in Auburn, his position will be a little more defined.

Herring played high school football at Monroe (LA) Ouachita Christian School, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 1,536 overall recruit in the 2021 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Louisiana-Monroe listed Herring as a redshirt senior on his official roster bio during the 2025 season. However, one year of eligibility remains for the new-look tight end. Taking a redshirt as a true freshman while at Louisiana opens up the door for Herring to play at Auburn for his sixth season of college football.

Auburn reworking 2026 roster through NCAA transfer portal

Auburn is going to look a lot different heading into the 2026 season. Much of the roster constructed by former head coach Hugh Freeze is out the door. While some talent did leave, the Tigers have to be happy with the additions. Golesh is putting his own flair on what the program will look like moving forward.

Of the 35 players to commit/sign with Auburn, 13 of them are following Golesh for USF. None bigger than quarterback Byrum Brown, who is expected to be the crown jewel of the class. Some other offensive weapons will make the trek as well.
