Greg McElroy ranks his Top 10 college football quarterbacks so far in 2025

Greg McElroy ranked his Top 10 quarterbacks in college football through Week 5 of the 2025 season. There’s an interesting order as we approach the halfway point of the season.
A lot of these names will be in the running for the Heisman Trophy as the season progresses. But, there will certainly be some surprises along the way.
So, let’s dive into McElroy’s top 10 quarterbacks as we get ready for Week 6. We’ll start at the top!
1. Dante Moore, Oregon
Moore tops McElroy’s quarterback rankings as we get ready for the October slate. After sitting a year behind Dillon Gabriel following his transfer from UCLA, Moore is showing why he was a much-hyped recruit.
Oregon is ranked No. 2 overall and Moore is in the Heisman conversation. Moore has 1,210 yards, 14 touchdowns, one interception and a 74.6% completion percentage.
2. Fernando Mendoza, Indiana

Mendoza is still one of the best quarterbacks in the country, per McElroy. Since transferring from Cal, he’s only gotten better for an undefeated Hoosiers team.
Indiana is also top 10 in the country. If he can keep it up, this team could get back to the College Football Playoff. Mendoza has 1,208 yards, 16 touchdowns, one interception and a 73% completion percentage.
3. Demond Williams, Washington
Williams gets a high ranking from McElroy coming off a tough loss to Ohio State. He’s been pretty impressive for Washington so far, but struggled by comparison against the vaunted Buckeyes’ defense.
The dual threat quarterback has been efficient though. He has 951 yards, six touchdowns, zero interceptions, a 75.6% completion percentage, 192 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
4. Jayden Maiava, USC
Lincoln Riley’s offense looks pretty darn good again. If only that defense could’ve stopped Illinois one more time Saturday. Still, Maiava is deserving of a high ranking in McElroy’s rankings.
Maiava, in his first year as a starter, has been very efficient in Lincoln Riley’s offense. He has 1,587 yards, 11 touchdowns, one interceptions and a 70.5% completion percentage.
5. John Mateer, Oklahoma

Mateer is still a top five quarterback according to McElroy. Injury doesn’t necessarily change that. But he’s still missing time.
Mateer might not make it back for the Texas game and the Sooners sorely need him. So far this season, Mateer has 1,215 yards, six touchdowns, three interceptions, a 67.4% completion percentage, 190 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
6. Ty Simpson, Alabama
Simpson led Alabama to a win over Georgia, despite not scoring any second half points. But it seems like he’s found his groove in Kalen DeBoer’s offense.

At this point, Simpson is a top 10 QB for McElroy and hasn’t budged yet. Simpson has 1,138 yards, 11 touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 69.3% completion percentage.
7. CJ Carr, Notre Dame
Speaking of quarterbacks coming into their own, Carr is doing just that! He makes McElroy’s top 10 quarterbacks through this point of the season and Notre Dame has gotten back on the right track.
This year, he has 1,091 yards, nine touchdowns, two interceptions and a 68.3% completion percentage. He also has a score on the ground.
8. Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt

Pavia is an absolute showman and you better believe the hype train will speed up if Vanderbilt beats Alabama again. McElroy has him in his top 10 but might push him higher with a win.
He’s on pace for career highs across the board, following an impressive 2024 season. This year, he has 1,211 yards, 13 touchdowns, three interceptions, a 74.6% completion percentage, 294 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
9. Carson Beck, Miami
Beck is still in the top 10 of McElroy’s rankings this week despite Miami having a bye week and other rankings shifting drastically. But, Beck’s been very solid through four games.
In four games, Beck is on pace to have another year of 20+ touchdowns and 3,500+ yards. He has 972 yards, seven touchdowns, three interceptions and a 73.2% completion percentage (a career high).
10. Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss
Chambliss kind of came out of nowhere this season, considering he wasn’t even the starter to begin the year. Well, he’s a top 10 QB per McElroy.
Chambliss took over for an injured Austin Simmons and it seems like it’s his job the rest of the way. The senior has 1,033 yards, five touchdowns, one interception, a 64.4% completion percentage, 266 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
