Lane Kiffin trolls Mississippi State during halftime interview

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin is never afraid to do a little trolling, even if he’s got more pressing matters at hand. Like on Saturday during a game against The Citadel.

Kiffin’s Rebels were up 35-0 at the halftime break and cruising. So he took a little liberty in his halftime interview on the Ole Miss Radio Network when discussing the first half.

“Just excited that Georgia is boat racing Mississippi State 38-7,” Kiffin said. “Oh, our game? I thought maybe you were talking about the first half of Mississippi State. I thought it was awesome…”

Somehow, Lane Kiffin managed to keep an eye on the goings on in Starkville during his team’s game. Whether it was having a staffer relaying an update or Kiffin checking his phone himself or a flash across the score ribbon in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, the head man seemed to know exactly how things were going.

After Georgia had wrestled with Mississippi State and actually trailed at the end of the first quarter, Kirby Smart‘s squad started to stomp the opponent in the second quarter and on. By the time Kiffin saw the score, it was very lopsided indeed.

The irony, of course, is that there’s potentially a world in which Georgia losing could benefit Ole Miss. The Bulldogs currently check in at No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings, one spot above the Rebels.

The top four spots in the final CFP rankings will earn a first-round bye in the playoff. But Lane Kiffin seemed content to wait on that, at least when the rival Bulldogs were concerned.

For its part, Ole Miss handled business expertly in a game against The Citadel. The score was 35-0 by halftime, giving the Rebels and Lane Kiffin a chance to get some backups some reps.

That included quarterback Austin Simmons, who is still working his way back from an injury. Simmons finished the game 7-of-12 passing for 100 yards, but with an interception.

Lane Kiffin, though, will be happy to have his preseason starter back, even if Trinidad Chambliss has thoroughly locked down the starting job at this point. And, of course, Kiffin was equally happy to see Mississippi State lose.
