On3 Power Five coordinators of the week for Week 1

Matt Zenitzby: Matt Zenitz09/05/23mzenitz

Each week, On3 selects coordinators of the week from each Power Five conference.

Our choices for Week 1:

ACC — Duke DC Tyler Santucci

In his first game as Duke’s defensive coordinator, Santucci was a key figure in the Blue Devils beating No. 9 Clemson and securing their first win over a top-10 opponent since 1989. In the 28-7 win, Santucci’s defense held the Tigers to one touchdown and forced three turnovers. Prior to joining Mike Elko’s staff at Duke, Santucci was Texas A&M’s linebackers coach the last three seasons. He was also co-defensive coordinator for the Aggies last year.

Big 12 — Houston DC Doug Belk

Despite losing some key players to injuries, Belk and his group limited standout QB Frank Harris and UTSA to their lowest regular season scoring output in three years during a 17-14 victory. UTSA, which ranked 14th nationally in scoring offense last season with an average of 36.8 points per game, had just seven points through the game’s first 54 minutes. Harris, the 2022 Conference USA MVP, finished with one touchdown pass and a career-high tying three interceptions.

Big Ten — Minnesota DC Joe Rossi

Even though Minnesota only got 251 yards and one touchdown from its offense, the Golden Gophers pulled out a 13-10 win over Nebraska thanks largely to Rossi and his defense. The only Cornhuskers touchdown came after a long kick return that gave them the ball at Minnesota’s 35-yard line. Aside from that, Rossi’s unit held Nebraska to three points and had four takeaways, including a crucial interception with 58 seconds remaining that halted a Cornhuskers scoring threat and helped to set up a game-winning field goal for the Golden Gophers.

Pac-12 — Colorado OC Sean Lewis

Led by Lewis, Colorado’s offense produced 565 yards and six touchdowns during the Buffaloes’ 45-42 win over No. 17 TCU. It was Colorado’s highest point total against a ranked team since 2001. QB Shedeur Sanders finished with a school-record 510 passing yards and four passing touchdowns. It came after the Buffaloes finished last year 127th out of 131 teams nationally with an average of 15.3 points per game.

SEC — Tennessee DC Tim Banks

In addition to scoring seven touchdowns on offense during its 49-13 win over Virginia, Tennessee had a strong day on defense too. Banks’ unit held the Cavaliers to 201 yards and 5-of-19 on third and fourth downs. Banks limited Virginia to just three points through 41 minutes of game action.
