As Quinn Ewers continued to slide in the 2025 NFL Draft, many wondered why he did not come back for another season of college football. Ewers likely would have been playing for a different team as Texas transitioned into the Arch Manning era. On3’s Pete Nakos reported on the interest Ewers was receiving from teams hoping he would hit the NCAA transfer portal, with offers reaching $6 million.

But as Ron Slavin, the quarterback’s agent, explained after the Miami Dolphins took Ewers in the seventh round, entering the transfer portal was never an option. Slavin says Ewers would have had to make a decision while Texas was still playing in the College Football Playoff.

If Ewers put his name on the open market with a matchup against Ohio State on deck, chaos certainly would have ensued. Not something Ewers or Slavin saw as a possibility.

“You can ask those questions, but the reality of it is the way the portal schedule is set, it was not possible for Quinn because he didn’t want to be talked to about the portal,” Slavin said via ESPN’s Todd Archer. “When they beat Arizona State on Jan. 1, the next game was Jan 10. If he was going to commit to Miami or Notre Dame, he’s going to do that while his team’s got a playoff game in a week? And his teammates are going to look at him like, ‘You’re going to another school if we lose?’ You can’t do that.”

Slavin added schools wanted an answer on Ewers’ decision on Jan. 1, the same day of the Peach Bowl against Arizona State. Miami and Notre Dame were mentioned specifically by Slavin.

Notre Dame was still alive in the CFP, going on to play in the national championship. Marcus Freeman did not take a quarterback out of the transfer portal this offseason as the 2025 starter will come from inside the program. Miami wound up with Carson Beck out of Georgia although, he did not announce a commitment until Jan. 10.

Ewers will instead get his professional career with the Dolphins. Playing for Texas is how he wanted to be remembered in the college football world, helping the Longhorns achieve success the program has not seen in a long time.

“He wanted to win a national championship,” Slavin said. “He wanted to leave a legacy at Texas. Now it’s supposed to be, ‘Do you want to talk about going to another school?’ To be able to flip your mind like that.”
