SEC officials punish Auburn, Vanderbilt following pregame scuffle
Emotions were always going to be high on Saturday in Nashville. Vanderbilt is looking to rebound after a loss, hoping to keep College Football Playoff hopes alive. And then there is Auburn, getting a breath of fresh air after Hugh Freeze‘s firing. Interim head coach DJ Durkin is quite popular among the players and in the running for the full-time gig.
However, things possibly boiled over too much during the pregame activities. Some back-and-forth talking took place and reached the point of an official throwing a flag. Not something we see too often, especially in a game not many would consider a rivalry.
“Words being exchanged between both teams right now pregame,” Justin Hokanson of On3 | Rivals’ Auburn Sports said via X. “Keldric Faulk got pissed and was out there pointing at dudes, and now flags are being thrown. Wild scene.
“The entire Vanderbilt team seemed to follow the captains out there for the coin toss and Auburn’s team seemed to respond by moving towards midfield themselves.”
Exactly what came from the penalty flags, we do not know. They were not mentioned on the broadcast and the game started as normal. Certainly a weird situation all around. However, hopefully it’s a sign of what’s to come — a fun one between two teams with a lot to play for.

More on the situations at Auburn, Vanderbilt
Beginning with Auburn, a few teams inside the SEC find themselves in similar positions. A mid-season firing brings a lot of headlines and, at times, can take away from the games. But you can count on Auburn playing hard for Durkin, who likely does have an interest in getting the job moving forward.
Something people on the Plains got frustrated with was hearing Freeze say how “close” the team was. He believed in the talent on the roster before falling short in multiple games. Maybe Durkin being the headman on the sidelines gets them over the hump to a degree.
As for Vanderbilt, anything other than a win kills the long-term goals set out by head coach Clark Lea. Or even Diego Pavia. Both of them have championship-level expectations, within the SEC and at the national level. Three total losses all but end those.
Tough battles remain ahead for the Commodores. Doing anything other than putting in a full 60 minutes against Auburn might doom them, though. An important one ahead for both sides.
