SMU fans throw goal posts in fountain at Dallas Hall after ripping away from electronic system

SMU putting together a historic performance meant chaos in Dallas. Fans stormed the field after the Mustangs took down No. 10 Miami on Saturday, eventually getting to the goal posts, despite there being an electronic system involved. A common move after college football upsets these days, they eventually made its way out of Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
Usually, the tactic is to dump the goal posts in a body of water. One issue — the city of Dallas is landlocked. A little different than places like Tennessee or Vanderbilt, where there are nearby rivers accessible for the celebration. Students did not have an obvious place to dump them.
For SMU, a fountain would have to do. One is located not too far from the stadium and outside Dallas Hall. Nobody was able to capture a video of the moment but the goal posts likely will reside there for at least the day.
“Was told the SMU students threw the goalpost in the fountain at Dallas Hall, which is incredible,” Lia Assimakopoulous of The Dallas Morning News said via X. “I guess that’s the closest body of water when you go to school in landlocked Dallas.”
Head coach Rhett Lashlee was notified of the goal posts leaving during his postgame press conference. His goal appears to be to get them off of SMU’s campus and into other parts of the city. Plenty of people will be celebrating this one and would love to get in on the action.

“Hope there’s one in Deep Ellum and one in Downtown Dallas,” Lashlee said via Billy Embody of On3 Rivals’ On The Pony Express. “Probably don’t need to take them through the Park Cities.”
SMU celebrating after historic, much-needed win over Miami
Yes, there are plenty of big-picture discussions when it comes to SMU taking down Miami. Beating a top-10 opponent at home for the first time in over 50 years is a great reason to party. The conversation easily could end there.
However, looking at what is ahead of SMU, this one was needed. Lashlee saw his team lose last week on the road against Wake Forest, making it a tough situation the rest of the way. In order to have a chance of making the ACC Championship and even the College Football Playoff, winning out was likely required.
The win puts them at 4-1 in conference play, still trailing Georgia Tech and Virginia. Both teams have yet to play on Saturday. Multiple other teams also have only one loss in the ACC.
