Upset Alert: Which college football teams could be in danger of falling in Week 8

The college football season really begins to ramp up this time of year. Week 8 brings us a loaded mid-October slate, finding some incredible games on the calendar. However, fans across the country are also always looking for a nice upset.

Josh Pate outlined a few that could occur on Thursday’s Josh Pate’s College Football Show. He brought out the Upset Alert Meter to give his thoughts on ??? games to watch for. Spanning as low as five and as high as eight, some drama could unfold on Saturday.

Oklahoma at South Carolina (+5.5)

“It’s on (LaNorris) Sellers this week,” Pate said. The number Pate believes South Carolina needs to score this week is 20, combating another offense that is struggling in John Mateer‘s Oklahoma.

This one has been placed at an eight on the Upset Alert Meter for Pate. The “double desperation game,” as Pate puts it, as both teams badly need to get back in the win column.

Texas A&M at Arkansas (+7.5)

If this upset is going to happen, Pate believes the third-down conversion rate is an area Arkansas found success. Not just on defense, but on offense too — currently being one of the best in the country.

Texas A&M sits at 6.5 on the Upset Alert Meter in a rivalry game. This one turns to Fayetteville after spending years at neutral site AT&T Stadium, meaning the home faithful will be jazzed up.

Texas Tech at Arizona State (+7.5)

Pate is not picking Arizona State to actually pull off the upset. But if there was a game where Texas Tech could get picked off, he thinks the Sun Devils have a chance.

“Arizona State, they’ve got to make a stand here.” Texas Tech finds itself at a six on the Upset Alert Meter, maybe needing to be careful in the desert.

Utah at BYU (+3.5)

“This is a big step up in competition for Brigham Young,” Pate said. True freshman Bear Bachmeier comes into a big environment, a little different than opposing veteran quarterback Devon Dampier, who has plenty of experience.

Rivalry games are always tough, especially when the lower-ranked team is a road favorite. That being said, Pate is setting this one as a six on the Upset Alert Meter.

Texas at Kentucky (+12.5)

For the first time ever, Texas travels to Lexington to face Kentucky. This comes fresh off a massive Red River Shootout victory, getting back on the right track.

Kentucky finds itself off a bye, searching for its first SEC win of the season. Pate puts it at a five, believing Texas should be able to take care of business but wants to see it play out first.

Louisville at Miami (-13.5)

Both of these teams are coming off a bye for a Friday night showdown. Miami, on paper, appears to be the ACC’s best team and Louisville is hoping to jump its way into contention.

“Louisville is not a bad team,” Pate said. “This is a bigger test for you than Florida State was. It’s just we didn’t realize that at the time.” Upset Alert Meter gets tuned to six for Pate.
