Former Vanderbilt UTL Matthew Polk has committed to Arizona State out of the NCAA transfer portal, the Sun Devils announced on Thursday. Polk spent three seasons with the Commodores and sat out the 2025 season.

Polk initially entered the portal on May 24 as a graduate transfer. During his three seasons playing for the program, Polk batted .295 with 25 doubles, 10 home runs and 13 stolen bases.

Polk’s transfer takes him closer to home, as he trades Nashville for Tempe, Arizona. A California native, Polk was the No. 13 overall prospect in the state of California coming out of high school, according to Perfect Game. He committed to the Commodores as the seventh-highest rated shortstop in his home state.

“Polky is a fixture in our facility,” Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin said, via Polk’s player bio. “He wants to be around the game of baseball all the time. Outstanding worker. Only knows one speed, a great motor and energy for learning and playing the game. … It’s very easy to see the carry over that has taken place from classroom to field. Matt can play all over the field…he can go get the ball in the outfield and also play in the infield. He is a dynamic and powerful kid…fun to watch.”

Now, Polk will join an Arizona State team which finished 2025 with a 36-24 overall record and an 18-12 mark against Big 12 Conference opponents. The Sun Devils were able to make the NCAA Tournament with their record, but saw their season come to an end earlier this month at the Los Angeles Regional, hosted by UCLA.

The 36 wins the Sun Devils enjoyed was the most the team enjoyed in a single season under current head coach Willie Bloomquist, as well as the most for the program since the 2019 season. Arizona State will look to improve on their strong 2025 season next year, and will have a veteran SEC talent on their roster to aid in that effort.
