WATCH: Daytona 500 comes down to the line with wreck in background

The Daytona 500 went to overtime after a late flurry of wrecks created a green-white-checkered finish and a close call at the line. Bubba Wallace’s 23 car – co-owned by fellow NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan – made a late run on rookie Austin Cindric’s 2 car but fell short after a collision on the final turn.
As the two cars came across the line just feet apart, images of a massive wreck played out in the background. The finish of the Daytona 500 lead to hard racing, big wrecks and some damaged cars but no injuries.
After the race, Bubba Wallace expressed frustration that he finished second, but thanked all the people working at 23XI racing for the work that went into the car. He also made it clear that this team assembled last year by Jordan and Hamlin, a pair of North Carolina natives, has put him in a position to compete in a way his former team could not.
More Daytona 500 wrecks
Another big wreck has changed the field of the Daytona 500 once again in the final laps. With a red flag on the racetrack, a handful of frontrunners have left the race in the final laps of NASCAR’s biggest race.
As drivers attempted to make moves toward the front, defending NASCAR champion Kyle Larson’s 5 car attempted to push Kevin Harvick’s 4 car. However, Chris Buescher’s 17 car in front of both was not travelling at the same speed and created a crunch where the middle car got kicked out in front of traffic.

Also involved in the wreck as Harvick’s car slid down the track was NASCAR’s most popular driver and 2020 champion Chase Elliott. While some of the cars will be able to continue, their cars sustained damage which could prevent them from charging to the front again by the time the race ends.
Just after the race got back under way, leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr was passed by two other cars and eventually wrecked into Bubba Wallace’s 23 car. As all cars were racing hard for the win, he got loose off the corner and Brad Keslowski’s 6 car caused him to spin.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr races a JTG Daugherty car, which is co-owned by former North Carolina basketball star and NBA player Brad Daugherty.
