The Houston Astros have selected LSU Tigers outfielder Ethan Frey in the 2025 MLB Draft. This comes following a national championship season for the Tigers.

A native of Louisiana who went to Rosepine High School, Frey was a highly touted recruit. At the time, he was a catcher and was ranked by Perfect Game as the No. 230 recruit in the country overall and the No. 12 catcher. He was the top catcher in Louisiana and the second-ranked player overall in the state.

Ethan Frey has played three seasons with the Tigers. During that time, he’s been a part of two different national championship teams. This most recent championship team, he’d quickly become a key member of on its run to Omaha.

In 62 games during the 2025 season, Frey had a .331 batting average with a .420 OBP and a .641 slugging percentage. That’s a 1.061 OPS. He also had 13 home runs, 15 doubles, and 50 RBIs in what proved to be a breakout season for the outfielder. Defensively, he had a 1.000 fielding percentage, not committing a single error all season, though he often was a DH. In the postseason, he would add a home run and nine hits with five RBIs.

That comes in a career where Ethan Frey played in 115 college games and had a .304 batting average with a .387 OBP and a .537 slugging percentage. That’s a career OPS of .924 for Frey. He also has 13 home runs, 19 doubles, and 69 RBIs for his three seasons at LSU. On top of that, he played in the Northwoods League in 2023.

A torn labrum in his right shoulder would require surgery. That cost him the opportunity to play summer ball in 2024. Still, once he was healthy, he came on strong in 2025.

MLB.com currently ranks Ethan Frey as the 119th prospect in the MLB Draft. There, MLB.com praised him for his combination of power and athleticism.

“One of the more imposing hitters in college baseball at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Frey is built to hit for power. He’s strong and has a quick right-handed stroke to go with an affinity to driving the ball in the air, a combination that allows him to hit balls out of any part of the park. While he lacks a long track record, he’s a patient hitter who has had success this year against both lefties and righties and all types of pitches,” MLB.com wrote.

“The fact that Frey has spent the majority of his college career as a DH belies his athleticism. A former catcher and dual-threat quarterback in high school, he has solid speed and had arm strength to match before he injured his shoulder. He should be able to play right field in pro ball and could merit a look in center.”

Whether it was in high school or college, Ethan Frey has proven himself to be a champion. Now, he’ll have the opportunity to prove himself a champion at the professional level.
