Matthew Murrell spent five seasons playing in Oxford, Mississippi. Now, as he begins his professional career in the NBA, he’ll be heading to Salt Lake City, Utah per reports.

ESPN’s Jonathan Givony reported on Friday afternoon that Murrell has signed a deal with the Utah Jaxx. That’s after not being a selection this week during the 2025 NBA Draft.

“NEWS: Ole Miss guard Matthew Murrell has agreed to a deal with the Utah Jazz, a source told ESPN,” Givony tweeted this afternoon. “Murrell is an outstanding defender who might be the most explosive athlete in this draft. Missed the pre-draft process with an injury.”

Murrell appeared in 153 games, 119 being starts, over a half decade spent playing for two coaching staffs at Ole Miss. He would average 11.7 points (41.1% FG, 34.8% 3PT on 1.7 makes), 3.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1..2 steals per game for the Rebels. With that, Murrell finished first all-time in games played, fourth all-time in three-pointers made, and in the top-ten all-time in scoring for the Rebels’ program.

Murrell had his best two seasons over his final pair with the program when it was under Chris Beard. He had a career-best stat line at 16.2 points (46.4% FG, 39.8% 3PT on 2.4 makes), 3.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.6 steals as an All-SEC Second Team Selection in ’23-’24. Then, in ’24-’25, Murrell saw his numbers go down to 10.8 points (42.4% FG, 31.9% 3PT on 1.3 makes), 3.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.8 steals but he would lead a team that made the postseason for the first time as the Rebels tied for their best-ever finish in the NCAA Tournament in making the Sweet 16.

A Memphis native, Murrell attended IMG Academy after starting out at Whitehaven High School. He rated as the No. 35 overall recruit in the class and a four-star in the 2020 recruiting class. He also ranked as a Top-10 SG in the class and a top-five player out of the state of Florida. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. That would make him one of the highest-rated commitments in school history for Ole Miss.
