<a href="https://www.on3.com/db/chance-mallory-180117/">Chance Mallory</a>, one of the top uncommitted point guards in the 2025 class, has cut his list to five schools: <a href="https://www.on3.com/college/maryland-terrapins/">Maryland</a>, <a href="https://www.on3.com/teams/tennessee-volunteers/">Tennessee</a>, <a href="https://www.on3.com/college/vanderbilt-commodores/">Vanderbilt</a>, <a href="https://www.on3.com/college/virginia-cavaliers/">Virginia</a>, and <a href="https://www.on3.com/college/virginia-tech-hokies/">Virginia Tech</a>. The 5-foot-9 senior out of St. Anne’s Belfield School (Charlottesville, VA) will announce his college decision on Saturday, March 22nd.



The four-star prospect originally committed to Virginia, but reopened his recruitment following the retirement of Tony Bennett.



Mallory is the nation’s No. 56 overall prospect, No. 8 point guard and No. 3 recruit from Virginia in the 2025 cycle according to the <a href="https://www.on3.com/db/rankings/industry-player/basketball/2025/">On3 Industry Ranking</a> — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="top-headlines">Mallory talks schools</h2>



In a recent interview with On3, Chance Mallory discussed several of the schools recruiting him. 



MARYLAND: “They’re a team, and they play like a team. I grew up playing a lot of basketball in Baltimore. They play a lot of, what I like to call, “Maryland Basketball.” A lot of gritty defense and hard-nosed basketball. Because of that, I feel like I could fit right in playing there. “The coaches there call me all the time, and we talk a lot. So we’re just continuing to build our relationship.”



TENNESSEE: “I mean, Tennessee is Tennessee. Their facilities are top notch. They keep their players to a high standard, which they should, they’re the top team in the country right now. They hold their players accountable and keep them under control which is nice.”



VIRGINIA TECH: “So they were one of the first schools to offer me, so they just continue to show me love and talk with me. We’ve got a great relationship. They’re a new team this year, so they’re trying to get the new players on the team into that groove, you know. They play hard and they have a coach that trusts them, so I feel like I could see myself coming in and making an immediate impact, if I do decide to go there, and the coach having a lot of trust in me.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-he-s-looking-for-in-a-school">What he’s looking for in a school</h2>



In that same recent interview with On3, Mallory noted what he wants in a college program. 



“Relationships and trust, those are my two main things with my decision. I’m a big loyalty guy, so a coach having trust in me and being loyal to me is very important. I like to play fast and play for a coach that gives his players a lot of freedom to make plays and make decisions.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scouting-report">Scouting Report</h2>



“This year Chance Mallory averaged 26.0 points on 51 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent from three. The 5-foot-9 point guard opened eyes with his tough-minded play, ability to score in traffic, and his deep, deep three-point shooting range. Mallory has a shifty handle with excellent balance and body control. He also pulls gravity once he crosses half-court, pulling the defense out because of his threat to knock down shots from the hash mark. This summer with Team Thrill on the UAA Next Circuit, Mallory averaged 20.4 points while shooting 36.2 percent from three and 83.7 percent from the free-throw line. This summer, Mallory took home <a href="https://www.on3.com/news/under-armour-next-circuit-top-performers/">On3 MVP of the Under Armour Next Circuit</a>, according to Jamie Shaw:



“Each time that Chance Mallory took the court he made plays. The compactly built lead guard plays with the utmost confidence on each possession. He has a strong handle that gets him to his spots and the 5-foot-10 Mallory carries range that extends out to 35-plus feet. In the games I watched during this event, Mallory displayed an understanding of when to score and when to distribute. Good things seemed to happen when he had the ball in his hands and initiated the offense. Mallory is also a uniquely good rebounder for his position.”
