Onyenso goes for a double-double as UVa blasts Hampton

UVa got a career-high 18 points and 10 rebounds from Ugonna Onyenso and put four others in double-figures in a 91-53 rout of Hampton on Tuesday night.
Onyenso, a transfer center who spent time at both Kentucky and Kansas State, also added four blocks in the win for Virginia (3-0).
In addition to Onyenso, Chance Mallory had 16 points, Sam Lewis added 13, Malik Thomas had 11, and Jacari White put up 10. Johann Grunloh was close with 9.
The Cavaliers led wire to wire once again—they’ve yet to trail a single second this season—and by as many as 44 in the game.
Over the course of the evening, the Hoos shot 55 percent from the field and 50 percent from deep. It didn’t help the Pirates (1-2) that they allowed UVa to rebound 55 percent of its misses. The Cavaliers finished with 15 offensive rebounds and 17 second-chance points.
UVa, which led by three at the first media stoppage, used a Mallory-inspired run to double the Pirates up heading into the under-12. By the next media timeout, the Wahoos had made six of their last seven shots and led 25-14.
A 10-0 run inside a 12-2 spurt by UVa forced a Hampton timeout with the Hoos up 31-14 with 6:51 left in the first half. It would be 47-19 at the break.
By the time the final media timeout of the first half came with 3:43 left, the lead was 20 and the Wahoos had made four of their last five field goals.
The second half was more of the same, as the Cavaliers kept their foot on the gas, scoring 44 points.
Michael Eley had a team-high 16 points for the Pirates, the lone player from his squad to score in double-figures. They were limited to 32 percent shooting from the field and outrebounded 49- to 25.
This the first time that UVa has scored 80 points in the first three games of a season in two decades.
