Around the SEC: Week 10

Even though Mizzou was on a bye, the rest of the SEC was full of action. Here is a glance at yesterday’s six conference games.

No. 20 Texas 34, No. 9 Vanderbilt 31
The No. 20 Longhorns sprinted out to a lead as Ryan Wingo broke free on a 75-yard touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage. Then Texas added a field goal and an Arch Manning 6-yard touchdown to CJ Baxter to take a 17-0 lead into the first break.
Vanderbilt got on the board with a field goal early in the second quarter, but Quintrevion Wisner ran in a 4-yard score to make it 24-3 midway through the second.
Diego Pavia hit Eli Stowers for an 18-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 24-10 going into halftime.
Out of the break, Manning added to the lead with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Emmett Mosley, then Texas added a field goal at the end of the third to make it 34-10.
Vanderbilt stormed back in the fourth with Pavia running in a 25-yard touchdown, hitting Stowers for a 67-yard score and completing an 8-yard touchdown to Richie Hoskins with 33 seconds left to cut the lead to 34-31.
But Texas recovered the onside kick and Vanderbilt’s comeback fell short.
Texas led 428-423 in total yards and 100-58 in rushing yards. Vanderbilt led 365-328 in rushing yards.
Pavia was 27-of-38 passing for 365 yards and three touchdowns. Manning went 25-of-33 for 328 yards and three touchdowns.
Pavia led Vanderbilt with 43 rushing yards, while Wisner led Texas with 75.
Stowers led the Commodores with seven catches for 146 yards. Wingo led Texas with two catches for 89 yards.
No. 9 Vanderbilt (7-3, 3-2) will host Auburn (4-5, 1-5) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
No. 20 Texas (7-2, 4-1) will be on a bye next week.
No. 5 Georgia 24, Florida 20
The No. 5 Bulldogs took the initial lead when Gunner Stockton hit Dillon Bell for an 8-yard touchdown. But DJ Lagway answered with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Eugene Wilson, then Florida added a field goal to make it 10-7 after the first quarter.
Georgia leveled it with a field goal in the second to send the game to halftime tied at 10.
In the third, Stockton connected with Noah Thomas on a 22-yard touchdown, but Jadan Baugh tied it with a 2-yard touchdown run. The teams went to the fourth tied at 17.
Florida took the lead with a 54-yard field goal early in the fourth, but couldn’t hold the lead as Chauncey Bowens ran in a 36-yard score with 4:36 left to create the final margin.
Georgia stopped the Gators on downs on the ensuing drive and ran out the clock.
The Bulldogs led 361-281 in total yards, 223-166 in passing yards and 138-115 in rushing yards.
Stockton went 20-of-29 passing for 223 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Lagway was 15-of-24 for 166 yards and one score.
Bowens led Georgia with 70 rushing yards, while Baugh led Florida with 72. Both had one touchdown.
Zachariah Branch led Georgia with 10 catches for 112 yards. Wilson led Florida with nine catches for 121.
No. 5 Georgia (7-1, 5-1) will play at Mississippi State (5-4, 1-4) at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Florida (3-5, 2-3) will play at Kentucky (3-5, 1-5) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Mississippi State 38, Arkansas 35
For the second consecutive week, the SEC had a battle of teams that were winless in conference play that involved Arkansas.
And for the second straight week, the team playing Arkansas came away with its first SEC win.
Mississippi State took the initial lead when Blake Shapen hit Davon Booth on an 8-yard touchdown in the first quarter. But Arkansas responded when Taylen Green connected with Rohan Jones on a 3-yard touchdown early in the second.
Then the Razorbacks hit two field goals to take a 13-7 lead into halftime.
The lead didn’t last long in the third as Kamario Taylor hit Anthony Evans for a 45-yard touchdown to take a 14-13 lead with 13:43 left.
Green ran in an 8-yard touchdown to take the lead back, then Mike Washington ran in a 20-yard touchdown to go up 26-14 and Arkansas added a safety to build a 28-14 lead.
Taylor ran in a 20-yard score to break Arkansas’ run and send the game to the fourth with the Razorbacks up 28-21.
Braylen Russell made it 35-21 with a 2-yard touchdown early in the fourth, but Booth ran in a 2-yard score with 10:16 left to cut it to 35-28.
After a missed kick was saved by a running into the kicker flag, Mississippi State added a 46-yard field goa to cut it to 35-31.
Arkansas wasn’t able to get a first down because of a holding call that brought back a 13-yard run and the Razorbacks were forced to punt.
With 3:08 left, the Bulldogs began the go-ahead drive that ended with Shapen hitting Evans for an 18-yard touchdown with 48 seconds left.
Once again, Arkansas could not garner a first down and the Bulldogs ran out the clock.
Arkansas led 433-388 in total yards and 239-106 in rushing yards. Mississippi State led 282-194 in passing yards.
Shapen was 16-of-28 for 242 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Bulldogs, while Taylor was 2-of-5 for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Green was 19-of-31 for 194 yards and a score for Arkansas.
Taylor led the Bulldogs on the ground with 55 yards and a score, while Washington led Arkansas with 116 yards and a score.
Evans led Mississippi State receivers with five catches for 111 yards and two scores, while Brenen Thompson had six catches for 107 yards.
Raylen Sharpe led Arkansas with five catches for 84 yards.
Mississippi State (5-4, 1-4) will host No. 5 Georgia (7-1, 5-1) at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Arkansas (2-7, 0-5) will be on a bye next Saturday.
No. 7 Ole Miss 30, South Carolina 14
The No. 7 Rebels ran away from the Gamecocks.
After South Carolina took the initial lead on a 1-yard LaNorris Sellers run, Ole Miss scored the next 17 point.
A field goal and a Trinidad Chambliss 8-yard pass to Dae’Quan Wright made it 10-7 going to the second quarter.
Then Chambliss ran in a 15-yard touchdown in the second to make it 17-7 going into halftime.
Sellers hit Nyck Harbor on a 47-yard touchdown to cut the lead early in the third, but Ole Miss hit a field goal to make it 20-14 going to the fourth.
Another field goal made it a two-score game, then former Tiger Kewan Lacy broke free on a 54-yard touchdown to create the final margin.
Ole Miss led 417-230 in total yards and 258-50 in rushing yards. South Carolina led 180-159 in rushing yards.
Sellers was 16-of-30 for 180 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Chambliss was 12-of-21 for 159 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Rahsul Faison led South Carolina with 52 rushing yards. Lacy led Ole Miss with 167 and a score.
Harbor led the Gamecocks with three catches for 69 yards. Deuce Alexander led Ole Miss with two catches for 52 yards.
No. 7 Ole Miss (8-1, 5-1) will host The Citadel (4-5) at noon Saturday.
South Carolina (3-6, 1-6) will be on a bye next Saturday.
No. 18 Oklahoma 33, No. 14 Tennessee 27
In one of the premier matchups of the weekend, a nine-point second quarter made the difference for the Sooners.
Tennessee took the initial lead when Joey Aguilar connected with Braylon Staley on a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Aguilar was strip sacked by Owen Heinecke and R Mason Thomas recovered for a 71-yard touchdown to tie the game with 8:01 left in the first quarter.
Tennessee added a field goal to make it 10-7 Volunteers going to the second.
The second quarter was all Oklahoma with three field goals to take a 16-10 lead into halftime.
Aguilar completed a 54-yard touchdown to Staley to retake the lead early in the third, but Xavier Robinson ran in a 4-yard touchdown to send the game to the fourth with Oklahoma up 23-17.
A field goal made it a 26-17 lead for Oklahoma early in the fourth, but Aguilar cut the lead to 26-23 with a 15-yard touchdown to Mike Matthews with 1:56 left to play.
Tennessee attempted to onside kick, but Oklahoma recovered at the Volunteer 44. Robinson broke a 43-yard run, then John Mateer ran in a 1-yard touchdown with 1:46 left to play.
Tennessee drove for a field goal to create the final margin with 50 seconds left. But once again, Oklahoma recovered the onside kick. This time, the Sooners kneeled out.
Tennessee led 456-351 in total yards and 393-159 in passing yards. Oklahoma led 192-63 in rushing yards.
Mateer was 19-of-29 passing for 159 yards and an interception. Aguilar went 29-of-45 for 393 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
Robinson led Oklahoma with 115 rushing yards. No Tennessee rusher reached 40 yards.
Isaiah Sategna led Oklahoma with six catches for 68 yards, while Matthews led Tenneessee with three catches for 76 yards.
Both No. 18 Oklahoma (7-2, 3-2) and No. 14 Tennessee (6-3, 3-3) will be on a bye next week.
Kentucky 10, Auburn 3
Oh boy Auburn.
Both teams kicked a field goal in the second to send the game to halftime tied at 3. Then Kentucky scored in the third when Cutter Boley completed a 13-yard touchdown to Kendrick Law.
Auburn led 241-240 in total yards and 118-79 in rushing yards. Kentucky led 161-123 in passing yards.
Boley went 18-of-29 for 161 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Ashton Daniels, who started in place of Jackson Arnold, went 13-of-28 for 108 yards and one interception. Arnold came in to go 2-of-3 for 15 yards.
Seth McGown led Kentucky with 53 rushing yards, while Jeremiah Cobb led Auburn with 72.
No receivers on either teams reached 50 yards. Law led the game with 49 for Kentucky.
Yuck.
Auburn (4-5, 1-5) will hit the road to play No. 9 Vanderbilt (7-2, 3-2) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Kentucky (3-5, 1-5) will host Florida (3-5, 2-3) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
