Last night, a school had their first player win the Heisman Trophy in program history. Unfortunately, that school was not Vanderbilt University. Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza was awarded the Heisman trophy after leading the Hoosiers to a 13-0 record and their first BIG 10 championship since 1967.
Fernando Mendoza finished the 2025 season (including the conference championship game) throwing for 2,980 yards, 33 TDs, and 6 INTs on 71.5% passing, he also ran the ball 69 times for 240 yards and 6 touchdowns. Diego Pavia led Vanderbilt to their first 10 win season in program history, punctuated by a 21 point victory on the road against in-state rival Tennessee. Pavia threw for 3,192 yards, 27 TDs, and 8 INTs. Pavia also ran the ball 152 times for 826 yards and 9 touchdowns. While these resumes and stats may seem somewhat close, the voting did not reflect that. After an extremely tight race between Colorado CB/WR Travis Hunter and Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty last season, the voting for this year’s Heisman trophy was not particularly close.
