When Alabama landed Five-Star Plus+ small forward Derrion Reid on Dec. 22, there was a possibility that he could have been the last addition for the program in the 2024 class. With the constantly changing world that is college basketball, however, that ended up not being the case.

On Sunday, the Crimson Tide landed another commitment from a highly touted senior prospect at the prep level: Labaron Philon. Philon announced his pledge to Bama less than a week after reopening his recruitment.

The former Kansas signee requested a release from his NLI on Tuesday, and was free to pick the school of his choosing just a couple of days later. Philon’s commitment came during a visit to Tuscaloosa this weekend.

Philon played for Link Hoops in Missouri, but is a native of Mobile (Ala.) where he played at Baker High School. Alongside Cincinnati, Kansas, and Ole Miss, Alabama was included in Philon’s final four back in August before committing to the Jayhawks a month later.

With Philon’s addition, Alabama adds to what was the No. 4 recruiting class entering Saturday. Philon joins a group that features Reid, borderline five-star Aiden Sherrell, and top-60 overall senior Naas Cunningham.

In Philon, Nate Oats and Company are getting the No. 33 overall recruit in the Class of 2024. The On3 Industry Rankings also tab Philon as the No. 5 point guard in this recruiting cycle. He is Bama’s first addition at point guard (from the high school ranks) in this class.

Philon scored 2,334 career points at Mobile (AL) Baker High, including 1,075 two seasons ago. In his three varsity seasons, he shot 49.2 percent shooter from the field. Philon transferred to Branson (MO) Link Academy to play his senior season. This past summer, playing with Team Thad on Nike’s EYBL Circuit, Philon averaged 12.6 points and 4.5 assists.

On3 Scouting Report on new Alabama commit Labaron Philon

“Labaron Philon is a quick-on-quick lead guard. He has long arms and a projectable frame with wide shoulders. Philon has a quick handle that gets him into the paint. He can knock down a jump shot with three-point range and consistency. There is a confidence and a competitiveness with Philon. He needs to add strength as he has a slight frame. There is upside on the defensive end; he can move his feet guarding the ball and is quick to get into the passing lanes. There is a natural smoothness he has on the ball with an upside to continue getting better.” — On3’s Jamie Shaw
