Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is reportedly retiring.

After one season back in Tuscaloosa, Steele plans to retire from coaching, according to ESPN senior writer Chris Low. Steele turns 66 in March and has spent 40 years in the profession.

Nick Saban brought in Steele as his defensive coordinator this offseason after Pete Golding left Alabama for the same job at Ole Miss. Steele is no stranger to the Crimson Tide program, having served two previous stints, including one as Saban’s first defensive coordinator in 2007. He did not coach a specific position group but oversaw the entire Alabama defense.

Asked at the Rose Bowl about being at this point in his career, Steele responded:

“It’s a lot of fun, particularly this group. Very, very, very easy to coach. Extremely coachable group of guys. Fun to be around. Very competitive. I’m enjoying it. I feel like I’ve got something to give. If that ever goes away or it’s dissipating or hurting the program, then I’ve got a boat.”

Now, Alabama is in the market for a new defensive coordinator for a second straight year.

Saban already had two openings on his staff with special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler being hired as the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State and wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins moving on to Texas A&M after the season.
