The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees compensation committee approved the contract for new head football coach Kalen DeBoer during a virtual meeting on Monday.

DeBoer, who was hired as the Crimson Tide’s 28th head football coach on Jan. 12, received an 8-year contract through Dec. 31, 2031. DeBoer is set to make $10 million during the 2024-25 season and his pay will increase to $11.75 million through the final year of the deal. DeBoer’s salary at Washington was $4.2 million, or 44th in the nation, according to USA TODAY.

He is now fifth based on last year’s earnings. Nick Saban led the rankings at $11.407 million.

DeBoer’s contract also includes incentives based on performance. He would receive $75,000 if Alabama makes the SEC Championship Game or $125,000 if the Tide wins it. Should UA make the College Football Playoff, he would earn one of the following: $150,000 for a playoff appearance, $250,000 for a quarterfinal appearance, $400,000 for a semifinal appearance, $600,000 for a championship game appearance and $875,000 for a national title.

Additional incentives include a $25,000 bonus is DeBoer is named the SEC Coach of the Year and $50,000 if he is presented a National Coach of the Year award. If Alabama’s graduation rate is in the top 50 percent of all SEC football teams, he will receive a $50,000 bonus. That bonus will increase to $100,000 if the Crimson Tide finishes among the top four in GSR.

The only buyout included in DeBoer’s contract was if he is terminated without cause, the university would be owed $5 million in 2024, $4 million in 2025 and $3 million in 2026.
