How Jermaine Burton is progressing
Jermaine Burton was brought in with the vision of him becoming one of — if not — the top receivers in Alabama’s offense. For some, Burton’s decision to leave the reigning national champions for Tuscaloosa felt odd. But after getting his reasoning on Monday, it shouldn’t.
“I’m just trying to make the best decision I can for me and my family,” Burton told reporters. “Like I said, again, I couldn’t thank this program enough for the way they welcomed me and brought me in and treated me like one of their own. From this point on, I’m just focusing on this team and what we can do to get better.”
Reading between the lines, it feels like Burton was seeking out an offense — and maybe a quarterback — that could better put his skill set on display for NFL evaluators and decision-makers. I want you to think about this next statement for a moment.
In two years at Georgia, Burton was only targeted 82 times. That’s more than any other player during that span. In comparison, Alabama saw not one, but two different receivers (Jameson Williams and John Metchie III) get over 100 targets in just last season alone.
To this day, Burton still hasn’t broken over 1,000 career receiving yards. Last season, Williams alone put up 1,081 yards receiving in just an eight-game stretch. Metchie wasn’t too far off over his last eight games (867 yards) either. This is probably why Burton chose the Crimson Tide.
Do I think that he’s a future first-round draft pick like the five other Alabama receivers have been over the last three years? Right now, I do not, but he’ll have a much better opportunitity to showcase his talent in Tuscaloosa. Expect him to be a huge part of Bill O’Brien’s offense.
