Former Alabama quarterback Clell Hobson Sr. passed away on Thursday. He was 93 years old and believed to be the Crimson Tide’s oldest living former quarterback before his death.

On scholarship for both football and baseball, Hobson played for Alabama and head coach Harold “Red” Drew from 1949-52. His final game in a Crimson Tide uniform was Alabama’s 61-6 win over Syracuse in the 1953 Orange Bowl, which was at the time deemed the most lopsided bowl win in college football history. His bowl game backup was Bart Starr.

After Alabama, Hobson then played professional baseball for five years with the Cleveland Indians organization. His son, Clell “Butch” Hobson Jr. – who also played quarterback for the Tide in the 1970s – played in the majors for the Red Sox, Angels and Yankees.

Hobson was born in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 28, 1930, and after serving as a grad assistant under Paul “Bear” Bryant, he spent 14 years as a teacher and football coach at various Alabama school systems beginning in 1958. Hobson was also a principal at Davis-Emerson (Ala.) Middle School and then an associate dean at Shelton State (Ala.) Community College.

From 1997-2001, he was a member of the Tuscaloosa City Council for one term. The City of Tuscaloosa announced on Thursday that flags will be flown at half-staff this weekend.
