Alabama’s football program is continuing to build momentum on the recruiting trail.

Just moments ago, the Crimson Tide earned a commitment from Georgia-based recruit Darrell “Duke” Johnson. Johnson is the second-ranked athlete in the nation, as well as the No. 7 junior in the state of Georgia. Per the 2025 On300, Johnson is the No. 34 overall player in this recruiting cycle.

He becomes the sixth commitment for Alabama in their 2025 class, and the fourth in the month of March. Bama also holds pledges from in-state recruits Antonio Coleman, Derick Smith, Anthony Rogers, and Myles Johnson, as well as Maryland product Zymear Smith.

Coleman and the two Smiths committed to the program earlier this month.

Johnson’s decision to team up with the Tide comes a couple of weeks after returning to Tuscaloosa for the first time with Kalen DeBoer at the helm. That experience made a strong impression on Johnson, who committed to Alabama over a group of schools that featured Florida State, Texas A&M, UCF, and USC.

“When I first got there, all the coaches wanted me to come home,” Johnson told On3’s Chad Simmons of his decision. “They wanted me real bad. I feel like they wanted me and I wanted to be there too.”

Johnson has been in communication with both defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Kane Wommack and safeties coach Colin Hitschler. He referred to Hitschler as a “scientist on the field” after seeing their practice, and enjoyed sitting in on the pre-practice meetings with Wommack.

In his conversation with Simmons, Johnson stated that he has the utmost trust in DeBoer.

“He’s going to keep Bama at the top,” Johnson said. “We have a lot of factors in the receiving corps and we have a good running back. We still have Jalen Milroe. The defense has been really good too.”

Alabama’s newest commitment has racked up several accolades in recent months.

Johnson was named First-Team All-Region as a defensive back in December. Johnson also earned the No. 2 spot in On3’s Under Armour top performers list at the UA Atlanta camp on Feb. 18. He went on to commit to play in the UA Game (January 2025) following that camp.
