It’s been an extremely active week on the recruiting front for the University of Alabama. The Crimson Tide secured commitments from three high school players, all who play on the defensive side of the ball. Luke Metz, linebacker from Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, Georgia, is the latest addition to the ’24 class.

Metz received an offer from Alabama on March 4. He has been in contact with the Crimson Tide coaching staff a few weeks prior to the offer. He visited on Wednesday and Thursday of this past week. He took an unofficial visit to Ole Miss on Saturday which was previously planned. His commitment, however, happened prior to the trip to Oxford.

“I made the decision on Thursday after practice,” Metz told BOL. “I knew it was where I wanted to be from just driving around campus. The vibes were great. I felt like it was a special place even before I talked with the coaches.

“I talked with Coach (Kalen) DeBoer in his office about an hour before practice. I don’t think they expected me to commit that day, but knew I would before Sunday. Coach (Kane) Wommack (defensive coordinator) came up to me on the practice field and just asked where I was at with everything. I was like, ‘Oh, I’m committed.’  He was super excited.

“Coach DeBoer was also super pumped. He called me on my way home. He (jokingly) told me that Coach Wommack is gonna have to chill out with all these linebacker commitments. He was just telling me how excited they are about me.”

Metz grew up an Alabama fan. The offer earlier this month quickly changed the momentum in his recruitment. He had strongly considered LSU, Michigan, Ole Miss and Oklahoma.

“What really impresses me about Alabama is just how everything is elite there,” he said. “They play an elite level of ball, they have elite facilities and great coaches. The campus is wonderful. I really can’t name one thing another school has better than Alabama. It’s hard to name anything that I like better anywhere else.”

Alabama culture passes test

The Peach State product noted how he feels great about the decision and ready to get to work. His family is excited especially with the easy drive to Tuscaloosa. Metz said he felt loved by the Alabama staff and considers them family.

He spoke with a few of his favorite college players during his Alabama visit including linebackers Jihaad Campbell and Deontae Lawson. It was encouraging to hear from current players how they have adjusted to the new coaching staff.

“It really checked the culture box off with how they were talking about the coaches,” he said. “There’s a lot of things that are the same, but some things are different. They didn’t previously have music playing at practice. It was kind of military-like. It was good to see how they do things. They coach hard, but they also are going to joke around with you and keep it loose. They want you to be the best you can be.”

Metz, who measured 6-foot-3, 223-pounds during the visit, enjoyed dinner at Chuck’s Wednesday evening with Coach Wommack and outside linebacker coach Christian Robinson (OLBs coach). He was able to learn more about his future coaches off the field, while also learning how the staff intends to use him in their system.

“They are looking at me to play the ‘Stinger’ linebacker position,” he said. “They see me as a Will linebacker. They said I am physical, fast and violent with my hands. They want me to play my style of ball. They’ll shape me to how I should fit in the defense.”

Metz said he is considering a return to Alabama next weekend for spring practice. He will also return on April for another unofficial visit, and will likely attend the A-Day game on April 13. He does not plan to take any other visits. Metz is on track to graduate in December.
