Former Bama QB throws shade at past teammate, takes questions on Twitter
Let me start by saying this isn’t how I planned for my Tuesday night to go.
After seeing a memory from six years ago on Facebook, I noticed a photo with three former Alabama quarterbacks in it. I’m not sure who took the picture, but I know it was shared by BamaOnline on Feb. 15, 2016. So, who’s in the photo? Well, it’s David Cornwell (No. 12), Cooper Bateman (No. 18) and Blake Barnett (No. 6).
Talk about a blast from the past, right?
I took that picture and shared it on Twitter. The caption was short and sweet: “This seems like ages ago.”
I shared the tweet around 7:30 p.m. No big deal, the plan is to be in bed by 9:30 or 10 p.m. at the latest. In a since-deleted tweet, an Alabama fan responded to me saying “Blake Barnett had so much talent… He couldn’t get out of his own head tho.” Once again, not a big deal. The plan to turn in early remains intact.
That is until David Cornwell decided to chime in. “I was in the QB room, he [Barnett] didn’t have much talent,” he replied to the fan. “Any other questions about the 2014-2016 seasons?”
Apparently, there were more questions. A lot more questions, actually.
Sure, the shade at Barnett was probably uncalled for. But Cornwell did his best to pull back the curtain on a lot of interesting information from his time at Alabama. Nothing that crosses a line or anything, but just sharing insight into certain players and situations.
The next topic was about former Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster, who Cornwell described as an “amazing guy” that “truly flipped a switch in between the lines.” Cornwell would know. He was teammates with him all three seasons he was in Tuscaloosa.
Soon after, former defensive back Tony Brown was brought up. Apparently, the player most fans would know better as “Crazy Tony” turned out to be one of the smartest players in Alabama’s locker room.
Next up? Shaun Dion Hamilton. After being invited to join a future Twitter Space to share stories, Cornwell said he’d need to have his former teammate join in on the fun. Then, he shared his thoughts on what Dion Hamilton did for the Alabama program.
Favorite teammate? Blake Sims.
Minkah Fitzpatrick? “Best player from start to finish I saw in my time there,” Cornwell said.
For those who are unaware, Cornwell transferred to Nevada after the 2016 season. In his lone season with the Wolfpack in 2017, he only attempted 25 passes, completing 13 of them for 97 yards while also throwing three interceptions. Barnett, on other hand, left for Arizona State in 2017 before ending up at South Florida for two seasons. There, he threw for 3,139 yards and 16 touchdowns to only 13 interceptions.
Sure, Cornwell can poke fun at others. But he isn’t above throwing himself in the line of fire either.
Oh, and we also finally got an answer to what his infamous signaled-in play was called. “X hump, north seal, fastball for that week to get Jalen [Hurts] out, and throw the quick flat to Calvin [Ridley],” according to Cornwell.
The more you know, I guess.
Talk about a wild Tuesday night. Or I guess it’s Wednesday morning by now.
