TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Ever since Alabama saw its starting quarterback Bryce Young go down with a shoulder injury in the first half against Arkansas, questions have surrounded his return. Will Young be back for the Texas A&M on Saturday, or will fans have to wait a little longer to see the reigning Heisman Trophy winner back on the field?

As of Wednesday, we still don’t have an answer to that question.

Alabama coach Nick Saban didn’t even give reporters a chance to ask about the status of his star quarterback during the weekly SEC Coaches Teleconference. Instead, he got out in front of it by revealing that Young’s status hasn’t changed that much since Monday.

“I’m sure that everybody wants an update on Bryce, so I’m going to give it you,” Saban said. “He’s doing some things in practice, and he’s still listed as day-to-day. No decision is going to be made until he decides and we decide, from a medical staff standpoint, whether he can go out there and functionally do his job.”

At this point in the week, the update shouldn’t be all that surprising.

And even if something were to be decided now, it wouldn’t benefit Alabama, from a game planning perspective, to reveal that decision. Right now, Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M are having to prepare for two quarterbacks and two potential game plans. Regardless, it sounds like Young and staff are taking this process one step at a time.

If Young is unable to go, backup Jalen Milroe will once again be counted on to lead the Crimson Tide offense. Last week against Arkansas, the sophomore signal-caller totaled 156 yards of offense (65 passing, 91 rushing) while throwing a touchdown and running one in.

On Wednesday, Saban was also asked about Milroe and the team’s other quarterback, five-star freshman Ty Simpson.

“Well, both guys are doing a really good job,” Saban told reporters. “I thought Jalen did a good job in the game. Always a little better when you have a week to prepare the guy and he knows he’s going to play. He’s had a good week so far this week.

“Ty is a very talented guy. He’s got a good understanding of the offense, so we’re pretty confident in him as well. Even though he’s a young player who’s certainly in the developmental stages, he’s shown a lot of promise and progress throughout the year.”

Alabama will take on Texas A&M this Saturday inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. Kickoff time is set for 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m.), and the game will air on CBS. Stay tuned for more updates on the Crimson Tide’s quarterback situation and more from the team here at BamaInsider.
