Alabama Football LB Jihaad Campbell recaps win over Tennessee

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold was not on the field for the start of the second half and emerged from the locker room in street clothes for the final two quarters of the Crimson Tide’s 34-20 win over Tennessee on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

After the game, Alabama head coach Nick Saban offered an update on Arnold’s absence.

“Terrion has a slight concussion,” Saban said. “He didn’t clear protocol, so the thing that you do is you don’t play the guy, and that’s for safety reasons. Hopefully, in a few days, he’ll clear.”

Arnold, who has started all eight games on the boundary this fall, recorded four tackles and one tackle for loss before exiting the rivalry game against the Vols. Trey Amos replaced Arnold at the start of the third quarter and closed out the game at the cornerback position opposite Kool-Aid McKinstry, registering one tackle and one pass breakup in the 14-point victory.

Saban praised the Lousiana transfer, particularly on Alabama’s non-offensive touchdown.

“Trey played well, played really well,” Saban said. “Made some really good plays, was very aggressive in coverage, had a couple pass breakups. On the sack fumble for a touchdown, if the guy would have thrown the ball – he double-clutched it – I think Trey Amos was going to intercept him. It was right in front of me. He double-clutched it and pulled it, and that’s when (Chris Braswell) knocked it out of his hand. So I thought he played really, really well.”

The Crimson Tide welcomed back two injured players for this game in defensive back Malachi Moore and tight end CJ Dippre. But Trezmen Marshall, while going through warmups with the first-team defense, did not see the field. Instead, Jihaad Campbell made his first-ever start and tallied 10 tackles and a fumble recovery that he returned 24 yards for a score.

Following the win, Saban provided an update on Marshall.

“Trezmen Marshall has like bruised ribs,” Saban said. “I always ask the player, ‘You think you can play?’ And even though he was able to practice a little bit in a black jersey, which means nobody can hit you – so he can move around decent enough, but every time he’d bump somebody, it was a problem. Hopefully, in two weeks, he’ll be OK.”

Alabama will take Week 9 off for its annual bye week and will return to game action on Nov. 4 when it plays host to the LSU Tigers in its penultimate home game of the 2023 season.
