It’s no secret that the biggest weakness for the Florida State baseball team in 2025 was pitching.

Specifically, relief pitching.

Well, that weakness might just turn out to be a strength in 2026 as Link Jarrett and his staff continue to add pieces to the staff. And on Friday, the Seminoles got one of the biggest pieces yet.

USC transfer Brodie Purcell announced he’d be spending his junior season in Tallahassee after he put together a terrific year for the Trojans in 2025.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander was – by far – the best reliever for the NCAA Tournament team a season ago, compiling an ERA of 2.11 in 42.2 innings pitched. He struck out 51 batters, walked 19 and gave up a .177 batting average against on his way to being named second-team All Big Ten as a sophomore.

He had four saves on the season and made 27 appearances in total. He gave up five earned runs in one inning against UCLA on May 3rd. He gave up a total of five runs combined in his other 26 appearances on the season.

He finished the year by pitching two scoreless innings against Oregon State in the NCAA Tournament.

Purcell joins a transfer haul for the Seminoles that already includes arguably the best starting pitcher in the portal in FAU left-hander Trey Beard.

Duke reliever Gabe Nard, Virginia’s Bryson Moore, Oregon’s Cole Stokes, Mississippi State’s Cade O’Leary, Central Arkansas’s Charlie Christensen and Kevin Mebil from Barry University are all new additions to Link Jarrett’s pitching staff for the 2026 season.

Along with Purcell and Beard, it’s obvious Jarrett and pitching coach Micah Posey are trying to turn a weakness into a strength for next year.

Draft news

Florida State star shortstop Alex Lodise became the first of the 11 Seminoles drafted this past week to sign with his MLB organization. The Dick Howser Award winner and second-round pick signed with the Atlanta Braves on Thursday for a bonus of $1.297 million.

Gage Harrelson, a 15th round pick, signed with the Los Angeles Angels for a bonus of $150,000.
